About us
At National Grid, we keep people connected and society moving. But it’s so much more than that. National Grid supplies us with the environment to make it happen. As we generate momentum in the energy transition for all, we don’t plan on leaving any of our customers in the dark. So, join us as a Asset Risk Manager within our Asset Management team and find your superpower.
Job Purpose
As our Asset Risk Manager, you'll lead the team responsible for identifying, assessing and managing asset and engineering risk across the network. You'll play a critical role in ensuring informed, evidence-based decisions are made about asset interventions, investment priorities and operational mitigations that support the safe, reliable and compliant operation of our assets.
Working closely with Engineering, Asset Management, Operations and wider business stakeholders, you'll turn complex asset condition, performance and network data into clear risk insights, helping the business understand where risk exists, how it's being controlled and where action is needed. Reporting to the Head of Asset Risk & Governance, you'll also drive the continuous improvement of our Asset Risk Management Framework and champion a proactive risk culture across the organisation.
What you'll do
- Lead and develop the Asset Risk Management team, setting clear priorities and fostering a high-performance culture.
- Own and continuously improve the Asset Risk Management Framework, ensuring consistent application across the asset lifecycle.
- Oversee the identification, assessment, quantification and prioritisation of engineering and asset risks.
- Maintain engineering and operational risk registers, ensuring risks, controls, owners and mitigation actions remain accurate and effective.
- Provide constructive challenge to risk owners on risk assessments, control effectiveness and mitigation delivery.
- Analyse asset condition, performance and network data to produce meaningful risk insights that support operational and investment decisions.
- Identify emerging and systemic risks, escalating material concerns through appropriate governance routes.
- Produce clear, high-quality reporting for senior stakeholders on risk trends, control effectiveness and mitigation progress.
- Support formal risk-based submissions including principal risk assessments, Safety Cases and ALARP assessments where required.
- Build strong relationships across Engineering, Asset Management, Operations, Assurance and Regulatory teams, promoting accountability, learning and continuous improvement.
About you
We're looking for an experienced risk or asset management professional who combines strong technical understanding with excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills.
You'll bring:
- Significant experience in asset risk management, engineering risk, asset management or assurance within a safety-critical, regulated environment.
- Strong knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, risk tolerability, control effectiveness and evidence-based decision making.
- Experience leading and developing technical or multidisciplinary teams.
- The ability to translate complex technical, operational and financial information into clear and actionable risk insights.
- Experience managing risk registers, governance reporting and mitigation plans.
- Strong communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to challenge constructively and engage senior stakeholders.
- A track record of improving risk processes, governance, reporting or data quality.
- An engineering degree, or equivalent professional experience.
- Professional membership and Chartered status (or progress towards this) would be advantageous.
Experience within electricity transmission, utilities or major infrastructure sectors would be beneficial, as would familiarity with Safety Cases, ALARP assessments and regulatory submissions.
Most importantly, you'll be passionate about safety, reliability and continuous improvement, helping us make informed decisions that protect our network and the customers who depend on it.
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £65,000 – £78,000 – dependent on capability
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 30% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
