Assistant Attorney General (Consumer Protection Unit)Job Description:
Civil Enforcement Division, Economic Justice Section (Consumer Protection Unit)
The Oregon Department of Justice has immediate openings for two full-time Assistant Attorneys General in the Consumer Protection Unit of the Economic Justice Section in the Civil Enforcement Division. The Economic Justice Section brings legal actions on behalf of the state to protect consumers, support working families, and ensure healthy competition in the marketplace, so that Oregonians are offered the best goods and services at the best price. The work often involves cutting edge issues of law and policy across an array of traditional and emerging industries.
The attorneys in these positions will focus on consumer protection. Consumer Protection AAGs investigate and litigate violations of laws that prohibit deceptive, unfair, and unconscionable business practices. This work is high profile and often involves complex litigation. Areas of focus include consumer finance, auto sales, health care, tech, and retail sales. Consumer Protection AAGs are responsible for all phases of civil investigations and litigation in state and federal court, including developing cases and investigation strategy, issuing and reviewing civil discovery, drafting and arguing motions, trying cases, and negotiating settlements. The Section works closely with consumer protection enforcement partners from other states to address trending issues occurring on a regional or national scale. In addition, the attorneys in these positions may occasionally be tasked with assisting other Economic Justice Section matters (such as antitrust, privacy, or false claims matters) as needed.
The ideal candidates will have experience identifying and developing cases, including case strategy, and the ability to plan next steps, anticipate obstacles, and take appropriate action to drive cases forward to trial or resolution. Successful Consumer Protection AAGs are self-directed but also enjoy working collaboratively and thinking creatively and strategically about the law.
Questions regarding these positions may be directed to Zach Mason, Attorney-in-Charge, Economic Justice Section, at zach.mason@doj.oregon.gov.
