Overview
Assistant Controller
Samaritan Daytop Village provides life-changing services in mental health, addiction recovery, housing, and more to help individuals and families across New York rebuild their lives. We serve over 33,000 clients annually at more than 60 locations throughout the five boroughs, as well as Suffolk, Rockland, Sullivan, Westchester, and Ulster Counties.
Based in the Samaritan Daytop Village Headquarters, the Assistant Controller partners with the Controller to oversee general ledger integrity, month-end close, financial reporting, and complex regulatory filings including Medicaid Cost Reports, CFR, and government grants. The Assistant Controller also supervises and mentors both accounting and account receivables staff.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily accounting operations, general ledger maintenance, and the month-end close process
- Review financial statements, account reconciliations, journal entries, and budget-to-actual variances
- Manage compliance and reporting for government grants, contracts, Medicaid, Medicare, OASAS, and DHS funding
- Prepare annual regulatory filings, including Medicaid Cost Reports and Consolidated Fiscal Reports
- Perform financial forecasting, trend analyses, and financial modeling for organizational initiatives and real estate projects
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate accounting and account receivables staff while fostering a collaborative work environment
- Maintain internal controls, safeguard organizational assets, and monitor specialized disbursements like Personal Needs Allowances
- Partner with leadership on special financial projects and strategic resource allocation initiatives
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, CPA designation or active progress toward certification preferred
- At least seven years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including at least three years in nonprofit accounting
- At least 3 years of experience supervising, mentoring, and guiding a team
- Strong expertise in nonprofit accounting principles, internal controls, and financial reporting
- Demonstrated experience working with government funding sources, grants, contracts, Medicaid, and Medicare
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and nonprofit accounting software, preferably Blackbaud Financial Edge
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Prior experience with OASAS, DHS, real estate accounting, or regulatory audits is a plus
Additional Information
This is a full-time exempt role with a salary of $110,000-$120,000 with a full benefits package. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 25 days of paid time off, access to a retirement account with an employer to match, and tuition reimbursement.
This role is based in Briarwood, Queens with an expectation of working from the office 3 times per week.
