PermanentBuild a brilliant future with Hiscox
The Role
This role sits within the UK Retail technology team, and it is aligned to the Core platform application IDIT/Merlin, with a future transition to a new document management system planned. In this role, you will be working closely with product owners, change, and engineering teams as part of a delivery squad or project.
As a member of the Document Configuration team, the Associate Application Consultant is responsible for delivering business document configuration changes in the Merlin (Sapiens IDIT) policy administration system under robust governance and quality controls. By taking on configuration changes previously handled by external Sapiens Implementation Engineers (IEs), this role helps to embed an internal document configuration capability in the business, reducing reliance on vendor teams and improving agility.
The focus is on safely and efficiently implementing changes to policy schedules, customer letters, and other system-generated documents, ensuring each change is fully tested and auditable.
Initially, the Associate Application Consultant will concentrate on Merlin document updates while also supporting the planned migration to a new centralised document management system, ensuring knowledge transfer and minimal disruption under the guidance of the Senior Application Consultant. This is an individual contributor role (no line management), dedicated to quality delivery of configuration changes within established standards and report into the Senior Application Consultant.
Key Responsibilities:
- Document Configuration Change Delivery: Implement and configure approved document changes in Merlin (Sapiens IDIT), taking each change from approved scope through to build and deployment. Clarify requirements and acceptance criteria with Product Owners or Business Analysts as needed to ensure full understanding of the change request. Adhere strictly to established configuration standards and controls throughout, maintaining quality, consistency, and alignment with governance processes. Maintain accurate configuration documentation and version control records for every change.
- Testing & Assurance: Perform thorough unit and integration testing for each document configuration change across all relevant scenarios (e.g. new business, renewals, endorsements). Prepare clear test evidence and to support robust change sign-offs and meet regulatory audit requirements. Work closely with Quality Assurance (QA) and the Lead to triage and resolve any defects, ensuring that all changes meet high quality standards and do not introduce unintended downstream impacts.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with business and technical colleagues to ensure successful delivery of document changes. Liaise with Product Owners and Business Analysts to confirm expected outcomes and to address any questions, ensuring the delivered solution meets business needs and fits within the technical design and constraints. Coordinate with Merlin platform engineers and IT teams to align on best practices and to obtain support or guidance when needed. Clearly communicate progress and any risks or issues to the Senior Application Consultant and other stakeholders in a timely manner.
- Transition & Continuous Improvement Support: Support the migration of document configurations from Merlin to the future centralised document management system, working on tasks such as analysing current templates, preparing configuration in the new system, and validating migrated outputs for accuracy. Assist in knowledge transfer and ensure that changes are delivered in a way that preserves continuity for the business during the transition. Contribute to regular process improvements by providing feedback on tools, templates, and workflows, helping the team streamline delivery while upholding quality and compliance standards.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Configuration & Change Delivery Experience: Proven experience in configuration or change delivery roles on complex software systems, ideally in insurance core systems or similar, with exposure to document/template generation processes.
- Governance & Quality Focus: Solid understanding of change governance, testing practices (e.g. unit testing), and change control processes in a regulated environment (insurance or financial services). Strong understanding of configuration change processes, including controlled build, defect resolution, and release readiness within established delivery frameworks.
- Attention to Detail: High attention to detail, with a disciplined approach to documentation and version control – able to maintain rigorous records of changes, test evidence, and approvals for audit purposes.
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with document template configuration (e.g. working with template files, content management tools) and ability to use relevant tools (such as version control systems and tracking tools like JIRA) to manage configuration changes in a structured, auditable way.
- Collaboration & Communication: Strong team player with good communication skills, comfortable working with both business and technical stakeholders to explain changes and gather the information needed. Able to coordinate tasks with colleagues (e.g. developers, testers) and contribute positively to a collaborative working environment.
Desirable:
- Merlin/Sapiens IDIT Experience: Exposure to Sapiens IDIT (Merlin) or a similar policy administration system, particularly in terms of document configuration or template management.
- Document Management Tools: Experience with document composition or management tools (for example, designing templates or managing content workflows) and awareness of modern document management solutions.
- Vendor Collaboration: Experience working alongside third-party system vendors or external consultants, with the ability to adopt best practices from vendor teams and contribute to knowledge transfer efforts.
- Agile Delivery: Familiarity with agile delivery methodologies and tools, and confidence managing changes through iterative development cycles with transparency and rigor (e.g. using JIRA to track tasks and ensure compliance with change control steps).
Ways of Working & Behaviours:
The Associate Application Consultant is expected to work with a high level of ownership and accountability on assigned changes. You are detail-oriented, diligent, and conscientious in following standards and governance processes, ensuring each change is delivered correctly and reliably. You are collaborative and proactive in seeking guidance from the Senior Application Consultant or technical experts whenever needed, and you communicate clearly with team members and stakeholders to keep them informed. You approach the role with a continuous improvement mindset – eager to learn new systems and skills, share knowledge with colleagues, and suggest improvements to tools or processes that will strengthen the document configuration capability for the business.
