About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Director for Health System Philanthropy, the Associate Director for Healthcare Philanthropy plays an important role in advancing UW Medicine’s mission by building meaningful donor relationships and securing philanthropic support for research, clinical care, and education across UW Medicine’s health system entities, clinical departments, programs, and emerging priorities. This position offers an opportunity to identify and engage prospective donors, develop and manage major gift fundraising strategies, and collaborate with clinical leaders, volunteers, and Advancement colleagues to identify high-impact opportunities. We welcome candidates who bring strong relationship-building skills, strategic thinking, initiative, and a collaborative approach to advancing healthcare philanthropy.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Fundraising Responsibilities – 85%

  • Manage a major gift and private foundation portfolio with annual expectations of 75–125 substantive donor contacts, 25 qualifications, and 4–10 solicitations, raising $500K–$1M annually.
  • Identify major and planned gift prospects through grateful patient data, research tools, faculty referrals, and donor history.
  • Conduct donor outreach through email, phone, and meetings to initiate and advance relationships.
  • Partner with the Director for Healthcare Philanthropy and colleagues on cultivation and solicitation strategies, documenting engagement in the University's prospect management system.
  • Collaborate with faculty and clinical partners to identify giving opportunities, build donor pipelines, and develop proposals and solicitation materials aligned with UW Medicine priorities.

Activities in Support of Direct Fundraising – 15%

  • Support annual operating plans, including quantitative and qualitative goals.
  • Develop donor engagement opportunities for Harborview, UW Medical Center, and UW Primary Care Clinics.
  • Build knowledge of UW Medicine's research, patient care, and education initiatives.
  • Ensure fundraising activities involving patients comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Pursue professional development, complete annual performance self-assessments, and perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, your application must demonstrate that you meet the minimum qualifications and additional qualifications listed below. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and four or more years of increasingly responsible experience in institutional advancement with a preference for experience cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding leadership gifts.

Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be forwarded to the Hiring Manager.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience with face-to-face donor cultivation and solicitation, with the ability to establish, cultivate, and steward strong relationships that build trust and lifelong partnerships while aligning donor passions and goals with the institution.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely, translating complex scientific and medical information into accessible language, while managing multiple projects with attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to communicate openly, directly, and professionally, foster dialogue, and resolve differences effectively.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion, and model the UW's ethical values.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams), and willingness to learn the UW donor CRM and other systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Development experience in a health care, medical research and/or higher education setting is preferred.
  • Development experience at an institutional giving organization.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid-work schedule with 2 days in the office and 3 days eligible for telework per week. The primary onsite work location is UW Medicine offices in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle.
  • Cubicle/open workspace environment that may result in higher noise levels and visual distractions.
  • Workload and times may vary, including occasional evenings or weekends.
  • Access to reliable transportation for local travel and willingness to travel when necessary.
  • Employees are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner in accordance with the UW Medicine Policy on Professional Conduct. An assessment of professionalism will be a factor considered in performance reviews, salary adjustments and promotion.
  • Alignment with UW’s Executive Order 81 Prohibiting Discrimination, Harassment, and Sexual Misconduct which establishes the University’s standards for preventing and responding to such conduct, including compliance with applicable federal and state laws. The University is committed to fostering an environment in which all members of its community can participate fully in University programs and activities free from discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, and retaliation.
