YOU
You are a structural engineering professional with experience or a strong technical foundation in wood truss design and construction. You understand how structural engineering principles, building codes, industry standards, manufacturing practices, and software come together in the design and production of wood trusses. You are interested in applying that knowledge to the development and maintenance of structural engineering applications and can work effectively across engineering, product management, software development, and user-experience teams. You communicate complex engineering requirements clearly, exercise sound technical judgment, and are committed to producing accurate and reliable engineering solutions.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)
Support the Development and Maintenance of Truss Engineering Applications (50%)
- Develop, document, and maintain engineering requirements and specifications for applications used in the design and manufacture of wood trusses.
- Translate structural engineering principles, building codes, industry standards, and truss-design practices into clear requirements for software development.
- Support the development and validation of engineering calculations, design logic, load applications, member and connection design, and other structural functionality.
- Evaluate application results for structural accuracy, code compliance, and alignment with accepted engineering practice.
- Investigate technical issues and recommend corrections or enhancements based on engineering analysis.
Collaborate Across the Product-Development Lifecycle (30%)
- Work with structural engineering, product management, software development, user experience, quality assurance, sales, and field teams to develop and improve engineering applications.
- Contribute engineering expertise to user stories, acceptance criteria, technical reviews, functional testing, structural validation, release readiness, and post-release improvements.
- Explain complex truss-engineering concepts and requirements clearly to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
- Provide technical input on customer and industry needs while helping teams distinguish engineering requirements from product, usability, and software-development requirements.
Support Engineering Knowledge, Training, and Technical Operations (20%)
- Create and maintain engineering specifications, validation criteria, technical documentation, and other supporting materials.
- Provide technical guidance and training to internal engineering teams and other application stakeholders, including external customers.
- Support the investigation and resolution of complex truss-design and application-related questions.
- Monitor relevant changes in building codes, design standards, construction practices, and truss-industry requirements, and help determine their effect on engineering applications.
- Help preserve and transfer specialized truss-engineering knowledge through documented requirements, repeatable validation methods, and cross-functional collaboration.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
If you can do everything listed above, you’ve got what it takes. Perhaps some of the following would be helpful too:
- B.S. degree in civil, structural, architectural engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited engineering program. (required).
- Current Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility to sit for the PE exam within one year of employment. (required)
- A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience with wood truss design, residential construction, component manufacturing, or a related structural engineering field.
- Knowledge of wood design principles, load paths, structural analysis, and applicable building codes.
- Familiarity with TPI or TPIC standards and their application to truss design and manufacturing.
- Experience using truss design software or other structural engineering applications.
- Ability to interpret engineering codes and standards and translate them into clear requirements, specifications, calculations, and validation criteria.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate complex engineering or software-related issues.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product management, software development, user experience, quality assurance, sales, and field personnel.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to technically accurate, reliable work.
- Experience with both United States and Canadian building codes, and direct experience in a truss fabrication facility are highly desirable.
