Position Summary:
Internet2 is seeking a strategic and technically accomplished leader to share responsibility for the technology and product strategy of its Trust & Identity services while providing primary leadership for platform strategy, architecture, and engineering. This role is responsible for translating strategic objectives into the technology platforms that support the InCommon Federation, Federation Manager, eduroam for the United States, identity and access management (IAM) services, and certificate services relied upon by participating institutions.
This position will drive the evolution of Internet2’s Trust & Identity ecosystem, including the transition to cloud-native federation and IAM services, while ensuring the reliability, security, scalability, and long-term sustainability of existing platforms. Working closely with organizational leadership, technical teams, community stakeholders, and external partners, this individual will guide software and open-source strategy, foster innovation, support data integration and analytics initiatives, build relationships across the trust and identity community, and provide oversight of vendor partnerships, service management practices, and budget planning.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Platform Strategy, Architecture & Innovation
Define and execute the platform strategy, architecture, and lifecycle for the Trust and Identity portfolio, balancing new capabilities with service reliability, including evaluation of platform capabilities and build-versus-buy technology decisions.
Lead next-generation federation initiatives, including OpenID Connect, OpenID Federation, IAM-as-a-service, quantum-resistant cryptography, and emerging AI-driven trust architectures, while maintaining existing SAML services and supporting participant migration strategies.
Software Engineering & Platform Development
Direct software development and platform engineering efforts, establishing engineering standards, CI/CD practices, and secure development processes.
Drive open-source strategy, platform sourcing decisions, and the evolution of Trust and Identity products and services.
Service Operations & Security
Ensure reliable delivery of mission-critical services through effective service management, incident response, change management, and support operations.
Oversee the security posture of platforms, including threat modeling, security governance, risk management, and post-quantum readiness.
Community & External Partnerships
Lead engagement with community technical leaders, governance groups, and standards initiatives across the research and education ecosystem, including participation in community governance related to technology, standards, and security.
Build and maintain productive relationships with internal stakeholders, peer organizations, suppliers, and strategic partners.
Leadership, Data Strategy & Business Management
Provide stewardship for Data Integration and Data Analytics initiatives during organizational transition and support enterprise data strategy efforts.
Lead people management, budget planning, contracts, financial oversight, and organizational administration while fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and awareness of emerging technologies.
The Ideal Candidate:
Strategic technology leader with deep expertise in identity, access management, federation, cloud-native platforms, and cybersecurity, with the ability to navigate complex technical and organizational challenges as well as leading complex platform portfolios, building external partnerships, and guiding community-driven technology initiatives.
Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communicator who can translate complex concepts into clear direction for institutional clients, executive leadership, board members, community stakeholders, and technical teams.
Collaborative and humble leader who excels at building trust, developing talent, facilitating shared decision-making, and partnering with others to discover the right solutions.
Highly adaptable and intellectually curious professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, balances competing priorities, embraces ownership and accountability, creates clarity amid uncertainty, and stays ahead of emerging technologies and industry trends.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology (or related field) supplemented by professional experience equivalent to a Master’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
10+ years of progressive technology experience, including significant software development experience in web application integration, identity and access management (IAM), federated and multifactor authentication, authorization, and information security technologies.
Deep expertise in federated identity and access management, including SAML 2.0 and federation operations, OpenID Connect, assurance frameworks, and RADIUS.
Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage institutional clients, executive leadership, board members, technical teams, and other stakeholders.
Experience defining product strategy, managing community-developed and community-relied-upon service portfolios, and balancing roadmap priorities, operational reliability, and lifecycle management across multiple technology platforms.
Demonstrated experience leading cloud-native platforms, integrating open-source and commercial technologies into scalable solutions, and evaluating emerging technologies and industry trends to inform technical strategy.
Experience overseeing secure, reliable technology operations, including security governance, incident command, change management, service management, and SLA/OLA-driven support models.

Demonstrated business and operational leadership, including project delivery, contract oversight, vendor and supplier management, budget accountability, and successful execution of concurrent initiatives.
