The mission of El Tímpano, fiscally sponsored by Mission Edge San Diego, is to inform, engage, and amplify the voices of the Bay Area’s Latino and Mayan immigrants. In the past five years, our staff grew from one full-time employee to 15, our reach expanded from Oakland to the entire Bay Area, and our newsroom has partnered with local and national news outlets, winning awards along the way for innovative and impactful journalism that centers Latino and Maya Mam immigrants.
The work of the Audience Engagement Producer will ensure that El Tímpano’s groundbreaking reporting and community resources reach the local, state, and national audiences who care about the issues and communities we cover and can take action based on our journalism. Primarily focused on social media and digital growth, they will be responsible for producing content and implementing strategic and creative approaches to amplify El Tímpano’s reporting, service journalism, and impact across social media and digital platforms, with the goal of increasing El Tímpano’s online audiences and their engagement with our work and organization.
This position is ideal for a bilingual (English-Spanish) producer passionate about audience strategy and excited about the possibility of using their skills to help El Tímpano grow our reach and impact. You are a great fit if you are skilled in writing compelling and concise copy, creating graphics and video for social media, and utilizing analytics to measure, evaluate, and iterate audience strategy. You are also an eager and communicative team player, as you will work as a creative partner and collaborator across El Tímpano’s teams.
This role will report to El Tímpano’s Director of Programs and Strategy with a dotted line to the Managing Editor.

Duties & Responsibilities
40% - Editorial social media content creation and distribution
- Create and manage distribution of social media content to amplify El Tímpano’s reporting, including writing sharp social copy and producing graphics and videos, translating stories into accessible and engaging content appropriate for each platform and audience
- Collaborate with the Managing Editor and reporters to create and execute story amplification and impact plans, including social media, editorial partnerships, and strategic outreach
- Produce content exclusively for social media, such as photo essays and explainers
- Support digital publication strategy on eltimpano.org with the goal of discoverability, loyalty, and engagement
25% - Service journalism social media content production, distribution, and engagement
- Produce and distribute a Mam-language video series, editing 2-4 short videos for social media each month
- Create and distribute social media content supporting outreach and awareness of El Tímpano’s service journalism, including in rapid response scenarios
- Respond to audience comments on social media, forwarding their inquiries to colleagues as appropriate
10% - Strategic communications to support organizational priorities
- Partner and strategize with development and community engagement teams to develop and execute social media and other marketing strategies in support of organizational priorities such as events, launches, and fundraising campaigns
- Support graphic design needs across the organization
- As a member of a small team, provide additional support as needed with digital production, communications, and coordination
25% - Metrics, evaluation, and learning
- Track audience growth, engagement, and impact metrics, including social media growth and engagement, website and search traffic, cross-publication and amplification
- Use analytics and audience research to derive meaningful insights to help drive audience strategy and inform organizational decision-making
- Execute social media advertising, boosted posts, and lead generation in support of audience goals and organizational priorities
- Occasionally manage contractors for graphic design or video support
- Work with the Director of Programs & Strategy to set ambitious goals around audience growth and audience engagement
- Research and experiment with emerging social platforms and strategies, staying ahead of industry trends and audience habits and continuously refining our engagement strategies

You Are a Great Fit If You Have…
- Fluency in Spanish and English
- 2+ years of demonstrated experience in social media, digital marketing and paid campaigns, and/or audience engagement, with experience in a news setting preferred
- Working knowledge of digital and social media tools, platforms, and best practices, including familiarity with Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, WordPress, and Google search
- Experience creating graphics for Instagram, shooting photography and video, and editing landscape and vertical video, including use of Adobe Premiere, Canva, and/or other graphic design and video production software
- Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to identify key takeaways and compelling points in a report and translate them into concise, accurate social copy
- Ability to manage tasks and juggle multiple projects on deadline in a remote workplace
- Creative thinker with a strategic mindset, able to innovate, iterate, and project manage ambitious ideas from seed to reality
- Collaborative spirit, thriving in teamwork and cross-functional projects; Excellent interpersonal communication, including the ability to communicate respectfully in diverse environments with colleagues, community members, and external peers
- Flexibility and eagerness to adapt, learn, and collaborate as our organization grows and evolves

- Starting salary of $75,000-$90,000 per year
