Overview
The AVP, Underwriting – National Partners is responsible for leading underwriting strategy, execution, and relationship management for national agency and broker partners. This role ensures underwriting profitability, drives growth through strategic distribution partnerships, and aligns underwriting practices with corporate objectives. The AVP serves as a key liaison between underwriting, sales, and service teams, ensuring a seamless experience for national partners and consistent delivery of underwriting excellence.
Responsibilities
- Lead underwriting strategy and execution for national partner accounts, ensuring alignment with corporate profitability and growth objectives.
- Manage underwriting teams and oversee risk selection, pricing, and portfolio performance across assigned national accounts.
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for national brokers and aggregators within the National Territory, fostering strategic partnerships and driving production.
- Collaborate with product, actuarial, claims, and risk control teams to develop and implement underwriting guidelines and product enhancements
- Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and emerging risks to inform underwriting decisions and partner strategies.
- Develop and implement compensation and incentive programs tailored to national partner performance and strategic goals.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal governance standards across all underwriting activities.
- Lead talent development, coaching, and succession planning within the underwriting team.
- Represent the company at industry events and with key external stakeholders to enhance brand visibility and partner engagement.
- Track and report on underwriting performance metrics, providing insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Requirements
- Deep understanding of commercial P&C underwriting principles, especially in large/national accounts.
- Proven ability to manage underwriting teams and drive profitable growth.
- Strong relationship management and negotiation skills with national brokers and aggregators.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to align underwriting practices with broader business goals.
- Proficiency in data analysis, pricing strategies, and risk assessment.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance frameworks in commercial insurance.
- Must be willing to travel to visit agency partners and regions up to 25% of time
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CPCU designation preferred.
- Minimum 7-10 years of commercial underwriting experience, including 5+ years in a leadership role and/or managing large or national accounts.
- Requires specialized knowledge in underwriting, risk management, and insurance regulations.
