Back-end Engineer
Location: Remote (Pakistan)
About Us
We are a fast-growing Los Angeles–based accounting and advisory firm that does things differently. Our clients expect precision, responsiveness, and practical solutions — not theory, unnecessary meetings, or endless bureaucracy. Internally, we operate the same way: clarity over noise, systems over chaos, and accountability over politics.
Traditional accounting firms burn people out with long hours, mindless busywork, and a lack of meaningful responsibility. That’s not how we work. You won’t fill out timesheets just to prove you exist, sit in endless meetings that accomplish nothing, or get buried under mountains of meaningless paperwork.
Instead, we focus on practical accounting work, client impact, and career growth — giving you meaningful responsibility from day one, exposure to interesting businesses, and the chance to develop the skills that will make you a future leader.
The Role
In this role, you will:
- Develop various in-house applications for Ottit
- Build and maintain APIs that power Ottit's core products, from initial architecture through deployment
- Integrate with third-party finance and accounting platforms to extend Ottit's functionality
- Take direction and feedback from leadership to champion development projects that empower business needs
- Contribute to decisions around application system architecture, scalability, and security as Ottit's applications grow
Who You Are
You're an ambitious, mid-level software engineer with backend experience who's always looking to grow your skillset. You love learning, aren't afraid to ask questions, and take real pride in doing work that's accurate, clear, and well-documented. You do well in structured environments, but you're just as comfortable managing your own time and priorities — and you get genuinely excited about digging into new technologies and projects.
Why You're a Good Fit
- Asks "why," not just "how"
- Balances detail-oriented execution with big-picture thinking
- Communicates proactively and takes feedback well
- Manages competing priorities with minimal oversight
- Driven by growth, scope, and ownership over time
Requirements
Education & Qualifications
- A degree in Computer Science
- OR a GitHub profile and portfolio with various contributions and projects to supplement lack of formal education (preferred)
Experience
- 3–5 years of software engineering experience, preferably in backend engineering
- 3+ years of experience with JavaScript frameworks such as Node.js, NestJS, and Next.js
- 3–5 years developing and contributing to APIs, preferably from the ground up
- 1–2 years of experience developing usable front-ends for APIs
- 1+ year of experience hosting your own applications on local or managed infrastructure
Skills & Competencies
- Solid understanding of Node.js, NestJS, and Next.js
- Able to use tools such as Postman and Mintlify to create bulletproof documentation
- Deep understanding of system architecture principles such as scalability, availability, and security within the scope of the application
- Basic experience with the Linux terminal, virtualization, and containerization (Docker and Kubernetes)
- Database programming using MySQL and PostgreSQL, as well as caching techniques using technologies like Redis
- General understanding of application security and the ability to identify possible vulnerabilities or oversights in code
- Ability to utilize cloud service infrastructure such as AWS, Oracle Cloud, or Azure
- Experience with finance and accounting API frameworks such as QuickBooks Online, Xero, or Bill.com
- Able to use AI to boost productivity — without relying on it to a degree that creates unmaintainable codebases
Key Responsibilities
- Actively participate in all stages of the development process — from design, to development, to testing, to release
- Adhere to coding standards and processes agreed upon by the team, including documentation
- Take feedback from end-users and management to continuously improve applications being developed
- Pinpoint deficiencies in systems and code — whether performance, security, or functionality — and actively pursue improvement through critical thinking
- Stay current on industry best practices and apply them to continuously improve Ottit's tools and processes
Non-Technical Competencies
You're an excellent team player with strong interpersonal and written communication skills. You're a self-starter who's well-organized, detail-oriented, and able to work with minimal supervision under tight deadlines. You're a lifelong learner who's eager to share new ideas with the team. Success in this role comes down to being hands-on, thinking analytically, and solving problems effectively.
