Right now, we’re searching for our next colleague to join as a Backend Engineer to help us protect our content and strengthen the technology behind a secure, reliable streaming experience. The Role 

As a Backend Engineer on playback security, you will develop the services and APIs that apply playback security decisions, revoke access and support effective action against unauthorized streaming. Working closely with other streaming engineers, backend engineers and other specialists across Viaplay, you will focus on connecting protection controls across the playback journey. Our backend services are built primarily in Node.js, Rust and Java, using serverless and event-driven architecture on AWS. We value shared ownership, learning from each other, and taking responsibility for services in production.

What a day can look like

• Develop playback services that support secure and reliable access to content

• Build capabilities and frameworks that help services respond continuously to security events

• Design and maintain secure integrations between playback- and security services

• Strengthen playback flows against unauthorized access and misuse

• Work across the platform to make content protection effective throughout the entire delivery chain

• Build and improve operational security interfaces and monitor and troubleshoot services to maintain reliability and performance

What we’re looking for 

You care about building reliable services and can reason about how security decisions affect real playback sessions. You’re drawn to problems without an obvious answer and willing to challenge how things are done. You think in systems, connecting the details to the bigger picture.  You’re curious about working alongside AI agents where setting direction, delegating tasks and challenging the results is a natural part of your work. You bring the confidence to experiment and the judgement to own what you deliver.

• Experience or curiosity to learn using AI-assisted development tools to build, test and improve backend services, while taking ownership of code quality, security and production behavior.

• Solid experience developing backend services with Node.js.

• Experience building secure, reliable and scalable services, including REST APIs and distributed or event-driven systems.

• Experience deploying services and infrastructure on AWS, using CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code.

• Experience with unit and integration testing, monitoring and troubleshooting production services.

• An understanding of authentication, authorization and access control, and a collaborative approach to engineering.

• Experience with playback services, access revocation, blocking frameworks, or security enforcement APIs.

• Knowledge of HLS, MPEG-DASH, CDNs or DRM, and an interest in how backend decisions affect content delivery.

• Experience with Rust or Java, or a willingness to learn.
