About the Role

The company is hiring a Senior Backend Software Engineer to take ownership of important backend systems, contribute to foundational technical decisions, and guide projects from initial design through production.

This role is suited to an experienced, hands-on backend engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and taking responsibility for the systems they build. It also offers a path toward Staff-level impact.

The technology stack includes Ruby on Rails, Node.js, Postgres, and AWS. However, experience with these specific technologies is not required. The focus is on strong backend engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and the ability to learn new technologies quickly.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and build external APIs that allow partners to access availability, pricing, reservations, and transaction management
• Develop data models that support different product types, inventory rules, pricing structures, and transaction lifecycles
• Maintain the reliability of critical workflows by handling retries, timeouts, concurrent requests, and partial failures
• Establish reusable integration patterns that help other engineers onboard partners efficiently
• Improve existing production systems through incremental migrations, testing, monitoring, and safe rollouts
• Own projects from initial requirements through launch and ongoing operation
• Work with senior technical leaders, Product, and business stakeholders to make practical design decisions
• Contribute to code reviews, mentoring, and clear technical communication

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated impact
• Strong backend engineering skills and recent experience writing production code
• Experience designing and delivering transactional systems, APIs, or integration platforms
• Strong understanding of relational data modeling and software engineering fundamentals
• Understanding of concurrency, consistency, asynchronous workflows, and production failure handling
• Demonstrated ownership of meaningful technical work from design through delivery
• Curiosity, a collaborative approach, and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies quickly

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with payments, orders, inventory, reservations, or marketplace systems

Location and Work Arrangement

• Full-time position based in Manhattan, New York City
• Monday through Thursday: In-office
• Friday: Remote

Salary and Benefits

• Base salary: Approximately $195,000–$220,000, depending on experience
