Minimum Qualifications

Education & Licensure
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Psychology, Social Work, or Counseling.

  • Current Michigan licensure as a Temporary Limited Licensed Psychologist (TLLP), Limited Licensed Master of Social Work (LLMSW), or Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC).

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment

  • Must qualify as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) in accordance with the Michigan Medicaid Provider Manual. QMHP qualification requires meeting the educational requirements above and one of the following:
    • Specialized training, including fieldwork and/or internships associated with an academic curriculum in which the student worked directly with individuals receiving mental health services; or

    • At least one year of experience treating or working with individuals with mental illness.

SUD Credentialing Requirements

For clinicians working with individuals with substance use disorders (SUD), all minimum qualifications must be met and one of the following credentialing pathways must be satisfied:

  • Have a current registered development plan leading to certification with timely implementation, or currently function under a time-limited exception plan approved by the Substance Abuse Coordinating Agency (SACA); or

  • Possess an applicable Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) or International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) credential; or

  • Hold certification through the Upper Midwest Indian Council on Addiction Disorders.

    What You'll Do

    Assessment & Evaluation

    • Engage individuals in a welcoming, hopeful, and empathetic manner, including during periods of acute need.

    • Conduct comprehensive, strength-based assessments to identify mental health, substance use, behavioral health, and co-occurring needs.

    • Assess for acute needs and risk and provide or coordinate appropriate interventions.

    • Complete diagnostic assessments, clinical interviews, and case history reviews within required program and funding-source timeframes.

    • Evaluate the interaction between co-occurring disorders and significant life events.

    • Demonstrate knowledge of diagnostic criteria for psychiatric and substance use disorders.

    • May administer, score, and interpret psychometric and/or projective assessments to support diagnosis and treatment planning.

    Treatment Planning & Clinical Services

    • Develop individualized, person-centered treatment plans that reflect appropriate treatment matching and address identified needs.

    • Establish measurable goals, objectives, and stage- or phase-specific interventions.

    • Provide short-term individual and/or group therapy and therapeutic interventions.

    • Provide crisis intervention and evaluate individual progress on an ongoing basis.

    • Assist individuals with identifying behavioral, emotional, and thought patterns that may contribute to relapse.

    • Support the development of relapse prevention and crisis plans using personal, community, and provider supports.

    Care Coordination & Consultation

    • Participate as a member of diagnostic teams and utilization review committees.

    • Collaborate with mental health, substance use, medical, school, vocational, and community providers to support continuity of care.

    • Provide case management and care coordination services as needed.

    • Serve as a liaison with community agencies and other providers to coordinate referrals and services.

    • Authorize medically necessary services in accordance with program and funding-source requirements.

    • Connect individuals with community resources, peer support, 12-step programs, Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), and other recovery-oriented supports when appropriate.

    Education & Support

    • Provide education and consultation to individuals, families, and support persons regarding diagnoses, treatment options, recovery, and available services.

    • Provide support and education regarding prescribed medications for mental health and/or substance use disorders.

    • Encourage engagement with appropriate recovery and community supports.

    Documentation & Quality

    • Maintain timely and accurate documentation, including assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and other records required by agency, program, and funding-source standards.

    • Review clinical records to support quality, appropriateness, and progress of treatment.

    • Collaborate with providers and support systems to promote continued care and positive outcomes.
