Blue Engine Independent Consultant Network Program Design, Facilitation, Coaching, and Implementation Support Type of Opportunity: Independent Contractor (1099) Location: Remote, with potential for in-person work and travel across the United States. We are particularly interested in building our network of consultants who are based in or near NYC, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Arkansas, Michigan, North Carolina, and Louisiana. Applicants from all U.S. locations are welcome to express interest. Engagement Period: Project-based opportunities throughout FY27 Compensation: Project-based or day-based fees determined by the scope, deliverables, required expertise, duration, and available budget for each engagement. Applications: Reviewed on a rolling basis Who We Are There’s no such thing as a “typical” learner. Blue Engine is an education nonprofit focused on ending long-standing patterns of disproportionate student outcomes by shifting the paradigm of “typical teaching.” We partner with schools, districts, and states to strengthen educators’ ability to ensure that all students—can access and engage in grade-level learning every day. Our work helps educators and education systems design for learner variability through: Teacher development Instructional leader development Systems-level consulting Across our partnerships, we prioritize high-quality instructional materials, inclusive instructional practices, educator collaboration, and the systems and conditions required for strong implementation. The Opportunity Blue Engine is building a network of experienced independent consultants who can complement our internal team with specialized expertise and flexible program support. Consultants may be engaged to support projects across three broad areas: Professional learning and Facilitation Instructional Coaching and Implementation Support Strategic and Systems Advising Depending on the project, this work may also include program or product design, research and analysis, and other specialized support. Engagements may range from a single deliverable or professional learning session to a series of facilitation, coaching, design, or advisory activities over several weeks or months For each engagement, Blue Engine and the consultant will agree on a project-specific scope of work defining the services, deliverables, timeline, fee structure, and points of collaboration. Acceptance into Blue Engine’s consultant network does not guarantee a specific assignment, volume of work, or number of hours. Potential Areas of Support Blue Engine may consider consultants for one or more of the following areas based on their experience and the project’s needs. Professional Learning and Facilitation Internalize, contextualize, and facilitate professional learning for teachers, instructional coaches, and school, district, or state leaders. Adapt existing Blue Engine content to partner context while maintaining the goals and integrity of the learning experience. Prepare, calibrate, and reflect with the Blue Engine project team to strengthen delivery and respond to participant feedback. Instructional Coaching and Implementation Support Provide individual or group coaching for teachers, instructional coaches, and school or system leaders. Support educators in using data, high-quality instructional materials, and inclusive practices to increase students’ access to grade-level learning. Conduct observations, learning walks, or implementation reviews and help partners identify strengths, barriers, and next steps. Strategic and Systems Advising Provide specialized thought partnership on instructional improvement, implementation strategy, leadership development, or systems change. Facilitate planning with school, district, or state leaders and advise on the conditions and supports required for strong implementation. Contribute specialized expertise to research, program or product design, emerging partnerships, proposals, pilots, or other strategic priorities. Expertise We Are Seeking Blue Engine welcomes applications from consultants with deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: High-quality instructional materials implementation and adaptation , particularly in Math and Literacy Specially designed instruction and supports for students with disabilities Multilingual learner instruction and language development Inclusive Tier 1 instruction and designing for learner variability Multi-tiered systems of support and curriculum-aligned intervention Co-teaching and educator collaboration District- or state-level implementation and systems change Applicants do not need expertise in every area. We will consider consultants for opportunities aligned with their experience, strengths, and availability. Qualifications Strong candidates will generally demonstrate: Substantial professional experience in K–12 education, educator development, and/or instructional improvement Deep expertise in at least one of the areas identified above A record of high-quality work and measurable impact on student outcomes, educator practice, organizational capacity, and/or student experience Experience working with schools, districts, state education agencies, or charter networks The ability to build trusting, productive relationships with stakeholders across roles, backgrounds, and identities Strong written and verbal communication skills adapted to different audiences and contexts The ability to work independently, manage deliverables and timelines, and communicate proactively about progress or potential barriers Responsiveness to feedback and willingness to participate in collaborative design, preparation, calibration, and reflection Alignment with Blue Engine’s mission and commitment to expanding access to grade-level learning for students who have been historically marginalized Depending on the engagement, Blue Engine may also prioritize: Experience facilitating adult learning in virtual and in-person environments Experience coaching teachers, instructional coaches, school leaders, or system leaders Knowledge of particular curricula, content areas, student populations, or geographic contexts Availability for in-person work or travel in a particular region How Consultant Engagements Work Consultants may be contacted when an opportunity aligns with their expertise, location, availability, and fee structure. Before work begins, each engagement will include a written scope of work outlining: Services and deliverables Timeline and milestones Preparation, delivery, documentation, and follow-up expectations Blue Engine and consultant points of contact Fee structure Travel expectations and reimbursements, if applicable Confidentiality, data privacy, and ownership requirements Consultants are responsible for executing agreed-upon services and deliverables in alignment with the milestones and quality standards established in the scope of work. Independent consultants are not eligible for Blue Engine employee benefits, paid leave, or retirement benefits. Blue Engine may invite applicants to participate in an interview, submit an additional work sample, or complete a brief demonstration aligned to potential assignments. Joining the consultant network does not guarantee a contract or future work. Blue Engine will contact consultants as relevant opportunities become available. Compensation and Travel Compensation varies based on the type of engagement, required expertise, geographic market, scope, and available project funding. Depending on the work, compensation may be structured as: Hourly work: generally $50–$100/hour Facilitation or coaching: generally $300–$600 for a half-day or $600–$1,000 for a full-day engagement , depending on scope Design, research, or advisory work: project- or deliverable-based fees established based on the scope of work Half- and full-day engagement fees are intended to account for the reasonable preparation, delivery, documentation, and follow-up associated with the engagement. These ranges are general guidance; rates may vary for specific projects based on the nature and complexity of the work, geographic market, and available funding. Final compensation and any eligible travel expenses will be established in the project-specific scope of work.
