P4 isn't your typical safety consultancy. We exist to bring clarity, pace and real-world support to an industry often bogged down in red tape and vague advice. We work with clients, design teams and contractors across the UK from offices in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and London.
We talk like real people. We are not here to impress with jargon or hide behind processes — we are here to help clients make smart decisions, avoid risk and deliver safer, better buildings. Our Building Safety Act team is growing, and this role is central to that growth.
We recognise that every person is unique, and we work hard to build a culture where everyone can be themselves. Whether that means flexibility around individual needs or simply making sure people have someone to talk to when they need it, we want everyone here to feel welcome, heard and valued.
About the role
We're looking for an experienced CDM practitioner to take day-to-day ownership of a portfolio of commissions across the North West. You'll advise clients on their duties under CDM 2015, and support or act on behalf of the Principal Designer through the pre-construction phase.
The projects range from fit-out and refurbishment to new build, across commercial, education, healthcare, residential, industrial and retail. Projects will typically be yours to lead, backed by a senior team and technical peer review. You'll split your time between our Liverpool office, client offices, design team meetings and sites.
This role suits someone who wants to influence outcomes rather than record them: challenging design decisions, asking the awkward questions early, and giving clients advice they can act on.
What you'll do
- Advise clients on their CDM 2015 duties, assess duty holder appointments, and help put proportionate management arrangements in place
- Prepare and maintain F10 notifications for notifiable projects
- Support or act for the Principal Designer: coordinating the design team, chairing design risk workshops, and evidencing how foreseeable risks are designed out or controlled
- Compile and maintain live Pre-Construction Information, and support a smooth handover to the Principal Contractor
- Review Construction Phase Plans, and compile and hand over a Health and Safety File that's genuinely useful
- Carry out site visits where monitoring is in scope, agree corrective actions, and track them to close-out
- Produce clear, well-evidenced reports, audits, advice notes and gap analyses, with auditable project records
- Act as the day-to-day contact on your commissions, manage your own workload, and contribute to fee proposals
- Deliver CDM training and CPD, and mentor graduate and junior consultants
What you will bring
Essential:
- Experience in a CDM advisory, CDM adviser or Principal Designer support role, gained in consultancy, with a contractor or in-house with a client
- Sound knowledge of CDM 2015 and the wider UK construction health and safety framework, including HSWA 1974, the Management Regulations 1999 and the Work at Height Regulations 2005
- A practical understanding of design and construction, and the confidence to read and challenge drawings, specifications and design risk information
- NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate, or equivalent
- Membership of APS, IOSH or another relevant body at any grade, or working towards it
- The ability to chair meetings and risk workshops credibly with senior stakeholders, plus excellent written English
- A proven ability to run concurrent commissions to programme without close supervision
- A full UK driving licence, willingness to travel, and existing right to work in the UK
Desirable:
- A qualification in construction management, architecture, engineering, building surveying or occupational health and safety, or equivalent experience
- CDM experience in live, occupied or phased environments such as healthcare, education or retail
- Knowledge of temporary works, asbestos in refurbishment and demolition, or logistics on constrained urban sites
- Experience delivering training or CPD to external audiences
- A valid CSCS card
What's in it for you
- Hybrid working and flexible hours, shaped around client and site commitments
- Holiday above industry standard, your birthday off, and a Christmas closure that doesn't use your allowance
- A buy/sell annual leave scheme, plus loyalty days after three and five years
- Vitality Health cover
- Salary sacrifice schemes, including EV cars, tech and cycle-to-work
- Paid professional development days and a personal development plan
- Maternity and paternity packages, a moving house pledge, regular socials, and charity and volunteering opportunities
