Position: Business Development Engineer
Company: Rooftop Energy Tech Sdn Bhd
Department: EPC (Solar Installations)
Reports to: Chief Engineer
Location: Damansara, Selangor, with frequent travel to client sites across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Labuan
Type: Full-time
About the Group
Dyna (Dynasynergy Technology Sdn Bhd) was founded in 2002 and provides off-grid, solar-hybrid, and grid-connected power solutions to telecommunications companies, state utilities, and large industrials across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Anchor customers include SESB, U Mobile, Maxis, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation, and the Royal Malaysian Navy. Certifications include Suruhanjaya Tenaga Class A, CIDB G7, and ISO 9001:2015.
Rooftop Energy, founded in 2025, is the solar arm of Altus Energy, the wider group that Dyna is also part of. It delivers commercial and industrial solar Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects and runs RooftopIQ, a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform that automates solar proposals and simplifies asset management.
The combined group has more than 70 staff across Shah Alam (HQ) and Kota Kinabalu.
About the Role
Rooftop Energy Tech Sdn Bhd (Rooftop Energy) is hiring a Business Development Engineer to take ownership of the front of our solar Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) sales funnel.
This is the first formal sales-side role inside the EPC team. Until now, business development has been distributed across the team. As the active pipeline grows, that model has reached its limit. Rooftop Energy needs a dedicated owner of initial proposals, client outreach, site visits, customer presentations, and price negotiation, so the Project Engineers can focus on design, sizing, optimisation, testing, and commissioning. This role is that owner.
What You Will Do
- Run initial client outreach. Take charge of the front of the funnel. Respond to inbound enquiries, follow up on warm leads from the board and existing customer network, and pursue qualified outbound prospects in the commercial and industrial rooftop solar segment across Malaysia. Keep the EPC pipeline tracker honest and up to date so leadership has a true view of conversion progress.
- Own initial proposals. Prepare client-ready solar EPC proposals using Rooftop Energy's RooftopIQ-backed proposal automation, supported by the engineering team for technical inputs. Cover system sizing, indicative bills of materials, financial returns, and implementation plans. Produce proposals that are accurate, defensible, and on brand.
- Shape the tools you sell with. Be the first in-house user of Rooftop Energy's lead-screening and proposal tools. Work each week with the engineer building them, test them on live deals and give clear feedback on what helps you close.
- Run site visits and customer presentations. Conduct site visits at customer premises to understand roof condition, single-line diagrams, load patterns, and operational constraints. Translate site findings into proposal inputs. Present proposals on site or in the boardroom, walk customers through the technical and commercial case, and answer their questions credibly.
- Negotiate price through to close. Lead price negotiation with the customer up to the point of award, within agreed pricing and margin guardrails. Hand over a clean, signed-off scope and price to the project execution team for engineering delivery. Build the kind of relationship that makes a follow-on Operations and Maintenance contract or a second project a natural next step.
- Maintain pipeline hygiene. Keep the EPC Master Tracker clean and current with the Chief Engineer. Status moves, dropped opportunities, won projects, and forecast values should be timely and accurate. Reconcile inbound, board-driven, and subcontractor-driven leads into a single coherent pipeline view.
What We Are Looking For
Must have
- A degree or diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, or Renewable Energy Engineering, or equivalent technical foundation
- Proactive about finding your own leads. You actively prospect, follow up on introductions, and turn cold contacts into meetings.
- Driven to close. You take ownership of pushing deals across the line.
- Willing to learn. Sales experience is not required, but you commit to picking up solar PV technology, TNB processes, financial returns, and commercial structures quickly.
- Comfortable on a customer site, including walking roofs and reading single-line diagrams
- Comfortable in a customer boardroom, presenting to commercial and industrial decision makers
- Strong written and spoken English and Bahasa Malaysia
- Willingness to travel frequently across Malaysia for site visits and presentations
Good to have
- Prior customer-facing technical sales, business development, or pre-sales experience, ideally in solar, electrical, mechanical, or industrial services
- Direct experience selling commercial or industrial rooftop solar in Malaysia
- Working knowledge of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems and TNB connection processes
- Existing customer or partner relationships in the industrial, manufacturing, or commercial property segment
- Familiarity with solar financial returns (return on investment, internal rate of return, levelised cost of energy)
- Exposure to Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and Self-consumption Renewable Energy (SARE) commercial structures
- Experience using a proposal automation tool or a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system
- Grid-Connected Photovoltaic (GCPV) design or wiring certification
- Experience using AI or automation tools in your own work
- Ability to speak Mandarin is a plus
Why join Us
- Build the function. The first dedicated business development seat in EPC. This role defines how the front of the funnel runs, what good looks like in proposals and presentations, and how the handover to engineering works.
- Real pipeline, real customers. A growing project pipeline, an expanding commissioned portfolio, and a customer network across Malaysia. The pipeline is real and so are the wins.
- Engineering-backed. The Chief Engineer, the Project Engineers, and the RooftopIQ proposal automation platform stand behind every proposal put in front of a customer.
- Visible scope. Direct line to the Chief Engineer and the Chief Executive Officer. Award decisions, pricing direction, and pipeline visibility happen with this role in the room.
- Performance-linked compensation expected. A performance-linked element is expected as part of the compensation package. Specific structure to be confirmed at offer.
- Path to lead. As the EPC pipeline scales, this role grows into the head of business development for Rooftop Energy with a team underneath.
- Hybrid working. Office-anchored with day-to-day flexibility.
- Flexible hours. No clock-in or clock-out.
- Leave. Annual leave, plus flexible unlimited leave on top, subject to approval.
- Health coverage. Medical, dental and hospitalisation coverage.
- Lunch. Subsidised daily lunch.
