Catechesis Project Worker (Full-time, 3-year contract)

Job purpose

The Catechesis Project Worker is a new role in the Archdiocese of Southwark and is a part of the Agency for Evangelisation and Catechesis, the department detailed to support parishes in the work of adult formation, the training of catechists and helping to spread the good news of Jesus Christ (evangelisation) across South London and the county of Kent. The role holder will work closely with the Catechesis Advisor in the creation of resources, delivery of training and provision of catechetical advice to parishes and volunteers.

Key responsibilities and main duties

1. Develop and run a programme of Deanery Catechist Days

2. Visit parishes and assist them to develop Parish Plans (for Evangelisation, Catechesis and Formation)

3. Grow and support a network of Deanery Mentors for Catechesis

4. Contribute to Agency events such as the Day for Catechists

5. Work with the Catechesis Advisor to provide advice to priests and catechists

6. Undertake additional projects as agreed with the Director and Catechesis Advisor, e.g. preparation for the establishment of instituted lay ministries in the Archdiocese of Southwark or sacramental guidelines

Standard duties:

• Take reasonable care of your own and others' health and safety, and follow the Archdiocese's policies and procedures.

• Uphold the ethos and values of the Archdiocese in carrying out the role.

• Undertake any other reasonable duties appropriate to the role and grade, as required.

Person specification:

Essential

Experience

• At least 5 years’ experience as a catechist (if fewer, exceptional commitment to the promotion of the Faith must be exhibited)
  
• Practicing Catholic
• Experience volunteering/working in parishes

Knowledge and Skills

• Good interpersonal skills
• Proficiency in Public Speaking
• Microsoft Office 365 or equivalent

Personal qualities

• Welcoming and hospitable
• Willingness to learn and contribute to the varied work of a small team

Special requirements (e.g. DBS, driving licence, occasional evenings/weekends)

• Frequent Saturday and evening work
• Driving Licence
• Practicing Catholic

Qualifications & training

Archbishop’s Certificate or similar theological training

Occupational requirement:

This role involves the training of catechists to pass on the Catholic faith, whole and unmoderated. As such, the person will need to be a practicing Catholic.
