Job Description
Location: London, United Kingdom (Hybrid)
Industry: Building Engineering Services / Environmental Simulation
Employment Type: Full-Time
About the Organization
Our client is a global multidisciplinary engineering and design consultancy recognized for delivering complex, high-performance infrastructure across international markets. Operating at the intersection of technological advancement and sustainable building design, the firm brings together specialists in mechanical, electrical, structural, and environmental engineering. Their teams solve intricate design challenges for next-generation spaces—ranging from high-efficiency commercial developments to hyperscale data centres powering modern computing.
Role Overview
Working within the Building Engineering Services practice alongside senior simulation specialists and multidisciplinary design teams, you will support the delivery of advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) consultancy services. In this role, you will apply principles of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and numerical simulation to analyze and optimize airflow, thermal comfort, ventilation strategies, and environmental performance across a diverse portfolio of UK and international projects.
Key Responsibilities
Simulation & Modelling: Build, mesh, run, and interrogate robust steady-state and transient CFD models under the guidance of senior technical leads.
Multidisciplinary Coordination: Interface with architectural, structural, and MEP engineering disciplines to identify project requirements, establish boundary conditions, and deliver tailored simulation solutions.
Drawing & Specification Review: Interpret complex architectural layouts, mechanical schematics, structural drawings, and technical specifications to extract geometry and operational parameters.
Quality Assurance: Conduct rigorous self-checks and peer reviews in accordance with established technical QA/QC protocols to ensure model accuracy and numerical validity.
Technical Reporting: Collate, analyze, and present simulation results, graphical data, and written technical reports to internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders.
Innovation & Best Practice: Support the development of emerging CFD methodologies, automation workflows, and industry-leading applications within the built environment.
Professional Development: Maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of relevant engineering standards, building codes, and simulation guidelines while progressing toward professional accreditation.
Core Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Simulation Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in CFD modeling utilizing the ANSYS simulation suite.
Theoretical Foundation: Strong understanding of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics, including familiarity with turbulence modeling, radiation heat transfer, scalar transport, and particulate modeling.
Technical Comprehension: Ability to interpret and cross-reference MEP, structural, civil, and architectural drawings.
Communication & Organization: Strong analytical problem-solving abilities, high attention to detail, and the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Software Competence: Proficiency in standard office and collaboration software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
Professional Affiliation: Active membership in, or clear commitment to working toward professional registration/chartership with, an accredited institution (such as IMechE, CIBSE, IET, IoP, or IMA).
Desirable Skills & Experience
Specialized simulation experience in data centre cooling systems, airflow management, and thermal optimization.
Proven exposure to indoor thermal comfort assessments, natural/mixed-mode ventilation, cleanrooms, atria, or industrial process environments.
External microclimate modeling, including pedestrian wind comfort, car park/tunnel ventilation, or atmospheric dispersion studies.
Fire dynamics and smoke control modeling (e.g., FDS).
Pre-processing and meshing tools such as ANSYS SpaceClaim, Fluent Meshing, DesignModeler, Rhino, or Grasshopper.
Familiarity with alternative or complementary simulation platforms (e.g., 6SigmaRoom, OpenFOAM, ParaView).
Working knowledge of BIM and CAD platforms (Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks).
Experience utilizing Linux environments, High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters, or scripting tools (Python, C/C++, VBA).
