ABOUT AMATA ENGINEERING

Amata Engineering is an independent Irish electrical engineering practice. We work for operators of large electricity demand facilities – hyperscale and colocation data centres, pharmaceutical and life-sciences campuses, industrial sites – and for the contractors and developers who build them. We sell no hardware, and we don't tender for the works we advise on. That independence is the reason clients bring us in.

Our work sits where the transmission system, the distribution system and the customer's own electrical installation meet: Grid Code compliance studies for demand facilities, power system modelling, connection-related engineering, electrical tender reviews, and EV charging and solar PV connections. Our engineers in Ireland and Romania work as one team on shared projects.

THE ROLE

We are hiring a Chartered Electrical Engineer to strengthen our team as we take on the work arising from MPID345, the recent change to the Irish Grid Code that brings fault ride-through and RoCoF requirements to transmission-connected demand facilities. You will carry out power systems studies, fill compliance study reports and model packages as a Chartered Engineer, and work alongside our engineers in Ireland and Romania on the study reports, model packages and technical submissions that large energy users send to the system operators.

This role suits someone who has worked inside a transmission system operator (TSO) or distribution system operator (DSO), at a utility or grid-connection consultancy, at an OEM, or in data centre electrical design and commissioning, and who now wants to apply that knowledge from the customer side of the connection point.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Grid Code compliance for transmission-connected demand

  • Carry out compliance studies for transmission-connected demand facilities under the new demand-side requirements in the Irish Grid Code (MPID345): fault ride-through (FRT), active power recovery (APR) and rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) withstand.
  • Define study cases at each connection point, run them, and write the self-assessment study reports.
  • Prepare and maintain derogation plans and quarterly progress reports for facilities operating under derogation, including monitoring of monthly demand against derogation conditions.
  • Take part in technical meetings and correspondence with the system operators, connection engineers and the client's legal and operations teams.

Power system modelling

  • Build, tune and validate EMT models in PSCAD/EMTDC, DIgSILENT PowerFactory and EMTP, and RMS models for transmission-system dynamic studies (TSAT/DSATools, PSS/E familiarity useful).
  • Model data centre electrical infrastructure: static and rotary UPS (including DRUPS), battery energy storage (BESS), standby diesel and gas generation, MV/HV switchgear, 110 kV and 220 kV customer substations, 38 kV/20 kV/10 kV distribution, power transformers, harmonic filters, STATCOM and reactive compensation.
  • Write model validation reports and plan model maintenance when plant, firmware or control settings change.
  • Work with equipment vendors to obtain model data, control block diagrams and type-test evidence, and to reconcile vendor models against site measurements.

Electrical engineering across our services

  • Review electrical tender packages: specifications, single-line diagrams (SLDs), load schedules, bills of quantities, protection philosophies and commissioning plans for data centres, pharma and industrial projects.
  • Load flow, short-circuit (IEC 60909), protection coordination and discrimination, arc flash, earthing, power quality and harmonics (IEC 61000, EN 50160, IEEE 519), voltage dip and transient studies.
  • Support grid connection applications for EV charging hubs, solar PV, battery storage and on-site generation, including maximum import capacity (MIC) and maximum export capacity (MEC) questions.
  • Review designs against I.S. 10101 (National Rules for Electrical Installations) and the relevant IEC/EN standards.

Reports and teamwork

  • Fill compliance study reports and model packages as the responsible Chartered Engineer, with a clear peer-review and QA trail behind every signature.
  • Work with engineers in Ireland and Romania on shared studies, with peer review in both directions, and help improve our modelling standards, templates and checklists.
  • Help scope, estimate and price study work, and present findings to technical and non-technical audiences, including our weekly online briefings for industry.

WHO YOU ARE

Essential

  • Chartered Engineer: CEng MIEI with Engineers Ireland, or CEng held through another recognised professional body (for example the IET under the Engineering Council UK) with the intention of registering with Engineers Ireland.
  • Degree in electrical, electronic or power systems engineering (BE, BEng, MEng, MSc or PhD).
  • Five or more years in power systems engineering, including hands-on dynamic or transient studies.
  • Working knowledge of grid codes, connection offers, connection agreements and compliance processes for generators or large demand customers in Ireland, the UK or continental Europe (ENTSO-E network codes: Demand Connection Code, Requirements for Generators).
  • Practical use of at least one of PSCAD, PowerFactory, EMTP, PSS/E or TSAT, and confidence writing reports that another engineer can reproduce.
  • Fluent written and spoken English, and the right to work in Ireland or the EU.

Strongly preferred

  • Experience at a TSO or DSO in Ireland or Britain: connections, operational planning, grid code compliance, dynamic studies, system protection or model review.
  • Data centre experience: electrical design, commissioning, critical power, UPS and generator integration, Tier III / Tier IV resilience, or operations for hyperscale or colocation providers.
  • Experience with fault ride-through, frequency response, RoCoF, voltage control or reactive power capability studies.
  • HV substation experience at 110 kV and above, including GIS and AIS.
  • Optional Romanian language skills, or experience working with distributed engineering teams.

Useful

  • Experience solving problems with AI, for example automating study workflows, reviewing technical documents or analysing measurement data.
  • Python scripting for study automation (PowerFactory Python API, PSCAD automation library), version control, and batch case management.
  • Familiarity with battery storage, grid-forming inverters, synchronous condensers, or large-scale renewables connections.
  • Experience giving expert input to regulatory consultations or industry working groups.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • A senior engineering role in a growing independent practice, in a team that shares study work across Ireland and Romania.
  • Work on a new regulatory requirement that affects the largest electricity users in Ireland.
  • Hybrid working, with site and client visits mainly in Dublin and Meath.
  • Industry-standard study software provided (PSCAD, PowerFactory, TSAT).

HOW TO APPLY

Apply through LinkedIn with your CV and a short note describing one power systems study you worked on: the question, the tools, and what you signed. If you are currently at a system operator or utility, we will treat your application in confidence.

Amata Engineering is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications from everyone with the right skills and experience, regardless of gender, civil status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race or membership of the Traveller community.
