Set the technical direction for how healthcare data moves between systems on a federal health program and stay hands-on enough to see your designs run in production. As the Chief Data & Interoperability Architect you will be the senior technical voice on data and interoperability, from cloud-native API modernization and FHIR/OMOP data standards to event-driven integration on AWS GovCloud. Working knowledge of SAFe is expected; no SAFe certification is needed.
Location: Reston, VA (onsite preferred). Primarily remote within the US, considered for highly qualified candidates, with frequent travel to Reston.
Clearance: US citizen able to obtain and maintain an ADP II clearance.
Remote candidates: you will be required to keep your camera on during the interview, and your interviewer will take your picture for identification purposes if an offer letter is extended to you.
This is in anticipation of future work!
What you'll do
- Own the data and interoperability architecture, including production HL7 v2 and FHIR interfaces, mapping and validation.
- Lead the migration of legacy SOAP services to containerized REST and FHIR R4 APIs on AWS GovCloud, using an API gateway and OpenAPI specifications, with no disruption to partners.
- Define OMOP Common Data Model and standard-terminology mappings and design event-driven or streaming data flows for near-real-time exchange.
- Design REST APIs and cloud-hosted integrations on an enterprise integration engine or API-management platform.
- Turn architecture into backlog work, surface dependencies early, and support iterative testing and release demos, working within SAFe and the Government’s Azure DevOps.
- Align development, data, operations and security teams on technical decisions, including AI/ML and other vendor teams.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s in computer science, information systems, engineering, health informatics or a related field with 8-12 yrs. of prior relevant experience.
- 10 years in software engineering, systems integration or data engineering, including 3 as a solution architect or technical lead for integration or data-platform delivery. Experience on an enterprise-scale exchange serving multiple external partners is preferred.
- Production HL7 v2 and FHIR interface experience, including source-to-target mapping and data validation, HL7-to-FHIR R4 conversion, and interoperability conformance testing.
- Experience designing REST APIs and cloud-hosted integrations using at least one enterprise integration engine or API-management platform. Experience with containerized microservices (such as ECS or EKS), API gateways and OpenAPI, and migrating legacy SOAP services to REST/FHIR, preferably in AWS GovCloud or an equivalent government cloud.
- Experience designing event-driven or streaming data flows (for example Kafka or Amazon MSK/Kinesis).
- Agile delivery experience: translating requirements into backlog work, managing dependencies, supporting iterative integration, testing and release demos, and coordinating decisions across teams, with working knowledge of SAFe and Azure DevOps (certification not required).
- Ability to meet the applicable Government work-role requirements: Government designated training for HIPAA Compliance, Information Assurance and applicable background investigation.
- Knowledge of MHS/DHA environments, such as MHS GENESIS, the Joint Health Information Exchange, and DoD-VA data exchange.
Nice to have: SAFe Architect (ARCH) or AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate. Neither is required.
