Help Shape Financial Leadership at Brain Injury Services

Brain Injury Services seeks an experienced nonprofit finance leader to serve as its part-time Chief Financial Officer. This position offers the opportunity to strengthen financial leadership and serve as a trusted strategic partner to the organization’s executive leader, senior team, and board.

Reporting directly to the organization’s executive leader, the CFO will guide financial strategy, strengthen confidence in budgeting and reporting, and help tell the organization’s financial story. The successful candidate will combine strong accounting expertise with an approachable, collaborative style, building relationships that support informed decisions and shared financial accountability.

The CFO will provide hands-on oversight while working closely with the bookkeeper, who handles much of the audit preparation and day-to-day accounting support. The organization uses QuickBooks Online and Excel, and the CFO should be comfortable translating financial information into clear narratives and visual presentations for varied audiences.

What You Will Do

  • Partner with executive leadership on financial strategy, sustainability, revenue opportunities, and organizational decisions.
  • Lead accurate budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and financial analysis.
  • Present budgets and financial results to the board, treasurer, and Finance Committee, explaining key trends, risks, and recommendations.
  • Coach managers and senior staff on budget development, including budgets prepared for funders.
  • Establish regular financial check-ins with managers to monitor performance, address concerns promptly, and support accountability throughout the year.
  • Oversee accounting processes, internal controls, and financial reporting in partnership with the bookkeeper.
  • Provide higher-level oversight of annual audit preparation and coordinate with external accountants and auditors.
  • Review investment information and communicate relevant considerations to leadership and the Finance Committee.
  • Partner with the Director of Development on funder budgets, financial narratives, and conversations that support fundraising.
  • Build the organizational knowledge and relationships needed to lead financial discussions independently.

What You Will Bring

You are a practical, collaborative financial leader who connects financial details to organizational priorities. You build trust, communicate clearly, and help colleagues become more confident in understanding and managing budgets. You are comfortable moving between strategic advising and hands-on oversight within a structured part-time role.

Candidates should bring:

  • Progressive financial leadership experience and demonstrated nonprofit accounting expertise.
  • Strong skills in budgeting, financial reporting, cash flow management, internal controls, and audit oversight.
  • Experience working with boards, treasurers, and finance committees.
  • The ability to explain financial information through accessible narratives, spreadsheets, and visual presentations.
  • Experience supporting funder budgets and partnering with development and program colleagues.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Excel.
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • Sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to build productive relationships across the organization.

A CPA designation, prior CFO or comparable leadership experience, and experience in a nonprofit human services organization are preferred.

Compensation and Schedule

The annual salary is $75,000–$80,000, plus benefits, for up to 20 hours per week. Health benefits are available at a 20-hour weekly schedule.

The position will follow a structured, mutually agreed schedule, with flexibility to accommodate seasonal workload demands. Availability is required for key leadership, budget, and audit activities, as well as approximately six board meetings annually and additional budget approval meetings. The hybrid arrangement includes occasional in-person presence in Northern Virginia and the broader DMV area.
