About Us

Most accomplished professionals can tell you what they have done. Far fewer can tell you what they are hard-wired to do, or why some mandates feel natural while others slowly wear them down.

Rutherford International brings together referral networks, psychometric data analytics, behavioural science and game theory. We use them to build a collaborative global community of high-potential and proven professionals across the industry sectors and leadership functions we serve. Individual and corporate members have access to private equity deal-makers, executive search, the Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™ for fractional and independent consulting engagements, and a knowledge network of industry mentors.

Every path begins with the RutherfordINTEL™ Assessment. Built on Personality Analytics 4.0™, it reveals your personality type and leadership style. It also shows how that hard-wiring shapes the way you think, decide, lead and perform. The science has been applied to more than 40,000 professionals spanning 1,500+ roles, with 85% predictive accuracy for performance potential.

See what that intelligence looks like in practice. This certified Rutherford Talent Guild™ member profile is an example of how we present our members to employers: confidentially, by membership number, and backed by science.

CIO — Family Office

SEO Title
Chief Investment Officer — Family Office | Rutherford

Meta Description
Explore future family office CIO opportunities with Rutherford International. Register interest in single-family or multi-family investment leadership.

Chief Investment Officer — Family Office

This Evergreen Career Profile invites investment leaders to register for consideration for the Rutherford Talent Guild™. It is an expression of professional interest in future opportunities, not an advertisement for a current vacancy. Registration is not an application for a specific role, and it does not confer membership or promise a placement.

A family office asks its Chief Investment Officer to turn a family’s objectives, obligations and values into investment decisions that hold up over time. The work combines total-portfolio judgement with something less common in institutional investing: offering independent analysis to the people who own the capital and keep the final say.

We welcome established chief investment officers, investment directors and heads of investment in single-family and multi-family offices, and investment leaders from private markets, endowments, foundations, pensions or wealth management who are preparing for this responsibility. We also welcome professionals who want to understand this functional vertical and where their own experience might lead. Registration records where you are now; curator review explores where you want to go and the evidence that supports it.

The mandate

The family-office CIO recommends and implements investment policy, asset allocation, manager selection and monitoring within the authority the family or firm delegates. Where direct investing is part of the mandate, the CIO assesses those opportunities too, or makes sure the expertise to assess them is in place. Liquidity sits at the centre: distributions, fund commitments, taxes and the needs of any family business must be met when they fall due.

Single-family and multi-family offices differ. In a single-family office, the principals or a delegated body usually reserve key decisions, and the CIO’s contribution depends on clear analysis, candid challenge and a documented route for exceptions. In a multi-family office, the CIO serves several unrelated families, balancing shared research and implementation with each client’s mandate and handling conflicts openly.

A family’s investment portfolio, its operating businesses and its balance sheet are different things. Overseeing the family’s interest in a business is not the same as running it.

Representative challenges

  • A principal supports a direct investment that would breach agreed concentration limits just as fund calls and family distributions approach.

  • Family members disagree about growth, income and preserving capital, and the investment mandate must reflect all of them.

  • A fund manager has an attractive headline record, while a direct co-investment offers lower apparent fees but needs specialist diligence and could delay liquidity.

Representative work

  • Investment policy, asset allocation and rebalancing within agreed limits.

  • Liquidity planning across distributions, commitments, taxes and operating needs.

  • Manager selection and monitoring; direct and co-investment assessment where relevant.

  • Clear reporting to principals, committees or clients, including risks and exceptions.

  • Coordinating tax, legal and other specialist advisers.

  • Leading an in-house team, or overseeing outsourced managers.

Accountability within the mandate

  • Accountable work: analysis, recommendations, monitoring and timely escalation, within the authority and information the office provides.

  • Shared decisions: policy, exceptions and major commitments approved by principals, clients or an investment committee.

  • Outcomes you influence: long-term portfolio results and the family’s ability to meet its obligations, which also depend on managers, markets and spending decisions.

What we are asking

The question is not simply whether you could hold a CIO title. It is whether you have the demonstrated capability, or the assessed potential, to lead investment judgement for a family or several families, and what professional development may be needed to get there.

For accepted members, a curator leads the development of a Career Thesis: the investment problem you are best placed to solve, the environments in which you have shown it, your contribution and authority, the evidence behind it and one development priority. It is not required at registration, and any summary is shared with an organisation only with your consent.

The Rutherford Talent Guild™

The Rutherford Talent Guild™ is for executives pursuing permanent leadership appointments. Rutherford manages a longer-term career relationship: interpreting your assessment alongside your experience, clarifying the mandates in which you can contribute most, identifying development priorities and, where there is a credible fit and under applicable arrangements, introducing you selectively to organisations for specific roles, including through private talent pipelines and Rutherford & Company retained searches. Family offices value discretion, and so do we: an introduction is made only with your consent.

If you also provide ongoing, part-time investment leadership, you may register interest in fractional work through the Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™. Each community has its own review, and acceptance into one does not imply acceptance into the other.

How the process works

Registration → initial review → assessment invitation → assessment → curator review → membership decision.

Completing the assessment, including any payment associated with it, does not in itself confer membership. Membership carries no promise of introductions, interviews, appointments or placement.

The RutherfordINTEL Assessment informs our evaluation of functional potential, leadership style and readiness for an investment leadership mandate.

About the RutherfordINTEL Assessment

RutherfordINTEL reports that its assessment predicts performance potential with 85% predictive accuracy. That is a statement about the instrument, not a guarantee or a probability of success for any individual, role or mandate. Your results are always interpreted by a Rutherford curator alongside your experience, achievements and objectives.

What we look for

Evidence before titles. During curation we will explore:

  • The investment responsibility you actually carried: the office or firm, the capital and its owners, your reporting line and the decisions you could take.

  • How investment policy and exceptions were set, and a time your recommendation was declined or overridden.

  • How you planned liquidity across distributions, commitments and operating needs.

  • Your experience selecting and monitoring managers, and assessing direct or co-investments where relevant.

  • How you communicated risk and uncertainty to principals, committees or clients.

  • What you were accountable for, what you decided jointly and what you influenced.

How we consider your background

  • Your title. A CIO title is welcome but not essential. We consider the responsibility you carried.

  • Length of experience. No fixed minimum applies to this Evergreen profile.

  • Size of office. No minimum asset level applies. We consider the complexity and authority of the mandate.

  • Professional designations. Recorded and considered alongside demonstrated capability.

  • Personality. No particular personality type is expected.

To register

Registration is short: your essential details, your function (F11 Chief Investment Officer), your sector and your current résumé. A LinkedIn profile is optional, and you do not need a Career Thesis. You will also answer three short written questions about investment decisions. Use an example you handled, or explain the approach you would take. Please do not include confidential or identifying family information.
