The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) serves as the senior physician executive of OrthoVirginia, responsible for the overall quality, safety, and clinical performance of the organization. This role combines strategic medical quality and safety improvement with physician leadership. The CMO works in close partnership with the CEO, executive leadership team, and the Board of Directors to advance OrthoVirginia’s mission of delivering best-in-class orthopedic outcomes through evidence-based, standardized care.
The ideal candidate is an orthopedic surgeon with a track record of physician leadership, clinical quality improvement, and peer engagement who thrives in a collaborative, data-driven environment.
A. Clinical Leadership & Oversight
- Provide strategic clinical oversight across all OrthoVirginia locations, ensuring consistent, high-quality, evidence-based patient care.
- Lead the development and implementation of clinical protocols, practice guidelines, and quality metrics aligned with organizational goals.
- Serve as the executive level senior physician decision maker in relation to clinical operations, patient safety, and care delivery.
- Develop, implement, and oversee the organization-wide clinical quality strategy, establishing measurable goals and key performance indicators aligned with national benchmarks and value-based care models.
- Champion the use of clinical registries, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and risk-adjusted outcomes data to drive continuous quality improvement across all OrthoVirginia regions.
- Lead the design and deployment of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and clinical pathways to reduce unwarranted variation and optimize outcomes in orthopedic care.
- Monitor, analyze, and report on quality metrics, complication rates, readmission rates, and patient satisfaction scores to the Board, executive leadership, and physician partners.
- Serve as the organizational expert on value-based care, bundled payment models, and payer quality requirements, ensuring OrthoVirginia remains competitive and aligned with evolving reimbursement paradigms.
B. Patient Safety & Risk Management
- Advance and maintain a culture of patient safety across the organization, promoting transparent reporting, culture principles, and systems-based approaches to error prevention.
- Oversee the patient safety program, including adverse event review, root cause analysis, safety reporting systems, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory, accreditation, and patient safety standards, including those set by CMS, The Joint Commission, AAAHC, and state medical boards.
- Lead safety-related communication to physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinical staff, ensuring timely dissemination of safety alerts, best practices, and lessons learned.
C. Clinical Standardization & Evidence-Based Practice
- Drive clinical standardization initiatives across the organization, including surgical protocols, perioperative care pathways, implant selection and utilization management, and post-operative rehabilitation programs.
- Collaborate with subspecialty physician leaders to develop and maintain consensus-based clinical protocols that balance standardization with appropriate physician autonomy.
- Lead formulary and implant committees to evaluate clinical evidence, cost-effectiveness, and outcomes data to guide supply chain decisions without compromising patient care.
- Identify and reduce unwarranted clinical variation through data transparency, physician education, and constructive peer-to-peer engagement.
D. Peer Review & Professional Standards
- Oversee the peer review program, ensuring it operates in a fair, objective, confidential, and legally protected manner in accordance with Virginia law and organizational bylaws.
- Establish and maintain credentialing and privileging standards for all physicians and advanced practice providers, working in collaboration with HR and medical staff leadership.
- Address clinical performance concerns through progressive and supportive mechanisms, including focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE), ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE), and, when necessary, formal corrective action.
- Serve as the primary physician liaison with hospital medical staff leadership at partner institutions regarding quality, credentialing, and clinical performance matters.
E. Medical Education & Training Oversight
- Assist in developing and supporting graduate medical education (GME) programs, including residency and fellowship training across OrthoVirginia.
- Ensure training programs meet ACGME accreditation standards and reflect current best practices.
- Champion continuing medical education (CME) initiatives and professional development for all physicians and clinicians.
- Foster a culture of academic excellence, clinical inquiry, and lifelong learning.
F. Legal Risk and Litigation Collaboration
- Serve as a clinical liaison to OrthoVirginia’s legal counsel, risk management, and compliance teams in matters involving malpractice, clinical disputes, and medicolegal exposure.
- Review and interpret complex clinical documentation in the context of active or anticipated litigation.
- Provide expert clinical perspective during case evaluation, deposition preparation, and claims resolution processes.
- Collaborate in the development of risk mitigation strategies based on litigation trends and claims data.
G. Clinical Informatics & Technology Leadership
- Guide the clinical vision for EHR optimization, digital health tools, and technology-enabled care delivery.
- Partner with IT leadership to evaluate and implement clinical decision support systems, telehealth platforms, and data analytics tools.
- Advocate for physician-friendly technology solutions that reduce documentation burden and improve clinical workflow.
- Ensure that clinical informatics strategies align with quality goals, patient safety priorities, and operational efficiency.
H. Strategic & Organizational Leadership
- Serve as a member of the executive leadership team and participate actively in strategic planning, business development, and organizational governance.
- Provide medical leadership and physician perspective on new service line development, market expansion, mergers and acquisitions, and partnership opportunities.
- Represent OrthoVirginia with external stakeholders including payers, health systems, regulatory agencies, professional societies, and community organizations.
- Partner with the CEO and COO to align clinical operations, financial performance, and quality objectives across all regions.
- Mentor and develop physician leaders throughout the organization, building a pipeline of engaged clinicians prepared to assume leadership roles.
- Participate in or lead key governance bodies, including the Board of Directors, Medical Executive Committee, and Clinical Quality Committee.
- Represent OrthoVirginia externally with payers, hospital systems, regulatory bodies, and professional organizations.
- Provide physician leadership during organizational change, including mergers, integrations, and new service line development.
I. Collaboration with Chief Quality Officer (CQO)
- Partner with the CQO to align clinical leadership priorities with quality measurement, performance improvement, and patient safety infrastructure.
- Support the CQO in developing and monitoring organization-wide quality metrics, clinical dashboards, and outcomes reporting.
- Collaborate on joint initiatives related to accreditation readiness, value-based care strategy, and population health management.
- Ensure CMO-led clinical programs and CQO-led quality programs are mutually reinforcing and strategically aligned.
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited orthopedic surgery residency program.
- Board certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) — must be current and maintained.
- Unrestricted medical license in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or eligibility to obtain prior to start date).
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive physician leadership experience in a group practice, health system, academic medical center, or comparable clinical organization.
- Demonstrated experience in clinical quality improvement, patient safety programs, peer review, and/or clinical guideline development.
- Strong command of evidence-based medicine principles and outcomes measurement.
- Exceptional communication, collaboration, and conflict-resolution skills with the ability to build consensus among physician peers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Subspecialty fellowship training in orthopedic surgery (e.g., adult reconstruction/arthroplasty, sports medicine, spine, trauma, or other recognized subspecialty).
- Advanced degree in healthcare administration, business, or public health (MBA, MHA, MPH, MMM, or equivalent).
- Experience serving in a CMO, Medical Director, Department Chair, or equivalent physician executive role.
- Experience with clinical registries (e.g., AJRR, ACS NSQIP), patient-reported outcomes, and data-driven quality programs.
- Active involvement in professional organizations such as the AAOS, AAHKS, or similar national orthopedic or medical leadership organizations.
- Research and publication history demonstrating scholarly engagement and thought leadership.
- Familiarity with value-based care arrangements, bundled payments, and risk-based contracting in orthopedics.
Compensation Range for this position:
$460,000.00 - $690,000.00Compensation for this role will be based on several factors, including the candidate's qualifications, relevant experience, education, skills, certifications, geography/market, and internal equity considerations.
