Gain meaningful clinical experience while supporting people across a variety of settings. We are seeking a Clinical Intern who is eager to learn, open to feedback, and passionate about person-centered care.
This supervised internship offers opportunities to build skills in mental health counseling, substance use services, intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) services, group facilitation, and therapeutic programming for older adults. You’ll collaborate with clinical and program teams while developing your professional identity and applying classroom learning to practice.
What You’ll Do
Under qualified clinical supervision, you will:
- Support individual and group therapeutic services, with opportunities for couples and family counseling based on your training and assigned placement.
- Participate in assessments, case conceptualization, treatment planning, behavioral assessments, and support-plan development.
- Observe, co-facilitate, and facilitate approved counseling groups, psychoeducation, and skills-based programming.
- Develop and adapt clinical curricula, activities, and participant materials to meet diverse cognitive, developmental, cultural, and communication needs.
- Complete timely, accurate clinical documentation and maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Collaborate with clients, residents, families, providers, and interdisciplinary teams to support coordinated care.
- Participate in supervision, case consultation, training, and reflective learning.
- Contribute to program development, quality improvement, and resource-development projects.
You will also maintain a regular presence at Bross Street Assisted Living, generally for approximately two hours at least once per week, depending on your assigned schedule and learning plan. This may include facilitating resident groups, developing emotional-wellness activities, supporting resident council initiatives, and creating programming focused on connection, coping skills, grief and loss, life transitions, and cognitive engagement.
What You’ll Learn
Depending on your learning objectives, program needs, and supervision plan, your experience may include:
- Mental health treatment for depression, anxiety, and trauma.
- Substance use counseling, addiction education, and Level I and Level II DUI education and therapy.
- IDD-informed interventions and behavioral support.
- Older-adult mental health and assisted living programming.
- Clinical documentation, ethical decision-making, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Seeking Safety, and trauma-informed care.
All clinical activities are assigned according to your demonstrated competencies, university requirements, supervision agreement, and applicable scope of practice.
What We’re Looking For
- Current enrollment in an accredited psychology, counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, addiction counseling, or related behavioral health program.
- Eligibility to complete a practicum or internship through your educational institution.
- Interest in mental health, substance use services, IDD services, community-based care, and/or older-adult services.
- Strong communication, organization, reliability, and professionalism.
- Willingness to receive feedback, ask questions, and actively participate in supervision.
- Commitment to ethical, person-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care.
- Ability to travel between assigned locations and perform assigned activities with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Successful completion of required background and registry checks, onboarding, and applicable training.
- Maintenance of student professional liability insurance when required.
