Job Summary:

Our leaders ask hard questions about the business every week. You will be the person who works out what they are really asking, finds the data to answer it, and comes back with a clear, commercially grounded view of what it means and what to do about it. You will be also producing management reports to provide the Leadership team with visibility on how the Firm is performing against various financial and operational KPIs.

The Role

Hamilton Locke, part of HPX Group, is a fast-growing, full-service law firm with a leadership team that wants to run the firm on evidence rather than instinct.

This role sits where business questions meet data. Reporting to the Director of Business Performance, you will work directly with Hamilton Locke’s partners, practice leaders and leadership team to understand the decisions in front of them, frame the questions that matter, gather the information needed to answer them, and turn it into insight they can act on. The role will also involve developing and analysing performance reports, at practice group, office and Firm level. You will provide regular updates and insights on how the business is tracking against various operational and financial KPIs. You will make facts-based recommendations to improve business and operational performance.

This is not a data science or data engineering role. We have a dedicated data team who build our data platform, models and dashboards, and you will work closely with them. Your value is commercial and analytical – understanding how a law firm makes money, knowing which numbers matter and why, and having the judgement to inform leadership.

This role is based in our Sydney office, where most of our partners are based. Building in-person relationships with the business is central to the role, and hybrid working arrangements are available.

The kinds of questions you will answer

  • Which practice groups are the most profitable? and why?
  • Which clients are we growing with, which are we quietly losing, and why?
  • Is our fixed-fee and capped work actually profitable once write-offs are counted?
  • Which practice group(s) were behind budget at the end of last quarter? And why?
  • Why did realisation drop in a practice group last quarter, and is it a one-off or a trend?
  • Are our recent lateral partner hires paying back the way we expected?
  • Where are we under- or over-resourced, and where should our next hires go?
  • How do we compare with the market on pricing, leverage and growth?
  • Is there a genuine business case for the [Tax] team to recruit 2 Senior Associates in Q2
  • What is the margin impact of a 3 days secondment for a junior lawyer in Perth?

What You Will Do

Be a trusted partner to leadership

  • Work alongside partners and leaders to understand the decisions they are facing, and help turn a vague request into a question that can be answered
  • Become the first call when someone needs to understand a number, test an assumption or build a business case
  • Challenge the story when the data does not support it, and raise issues and opportunities nobody has asked about yet

Find and assemble the evidence

  • Bring together data from across the business (practice management, finance, CRM, HR and matter data) and from outside it where needed, such as market benchmarks, industry reports, and client and competitor information
  • Reconcile and sense-check numbers from different sources, and know when the data is good enough for the decision at hand
  • Where the data does not exist, work out how to get it, whether that is a quick survey of partners, a sample of matters, or a request to our data team

Turn data into insight

  • Analyse profitability, pricing, utilisation, leverage, realisation, lock-up, pipeline and client performance across the firm’s practice groups
  • Produce short, clear outputs (a one-page memo, a few slides, a conversation) that lead with the "so what" and a recommendation
  • Present your findings directly to partners, practice leaders and the leadership team

Build lasting insight, not just one-off answers

  • Spot the questions that keep coming back and work with the data team to turn them into reliable, self-serve reporting
  • Help shape the metrics leadership use to run the business, and make sure people understand what they mean and how to use them
  • Support major commercial moments, including pricing for significant pitches, budgeting and planning, and strategic reviews, with analysis that stands up to scrutiny
  • Produce management reports
  • Lead the development of management reports for Hamilton Locke (e.g. ExCo, XLT, Quartetly PG reviews, etc)
  • Report progress against KPIs at practice group, office and Firm level
  • Analyse data and provide key insights and make facts-based recommendations to improve business performance
