About the role
We're hiring a Compliance Officer to take hands-on ownership of day-to-day compliance across String's cross-border payments business and help strengthen the compliance framework as we scale.
This is a middle-ground role: senior enough to exercise independent judgement, manage complex reviews and improve controls, but still highly operational. You will work closely with the CEO and teams across Operations, Treasury, Commercial and Engineering to make sure our compliance requirements work in practice, not just on paper.
What you'll do
Own day-to-day KYC/KYB, AML/CFT, sanctions and customer-risk processes across relevant String businesses
Review and approve business customer and counterparty onboarding in line with String's policies and risk appetite
Conduct enhanced due diligence on higher-risk customers, counterparties and transactions
Review source-of-funds, source-of-wealth, transaction-purpose and supporting trade documentation where required
Run sanctions, PEP and adverse-media reviews and investigate transaction-monitoring alerts
Review international supplier-payment activity and escalate unusual or potentially suspicious transactions
Maintain customer risk assessments, periodic reviews, compliance records and audit trails
Handle compliance and due-diligence requests from banking, payment, liquidity and other financial partners
Support regulatory reporting, audits, examinations and information requests for the applicable String entity
Maintain and improve AML/CFT, sanctions, onboarding, transaction-monitoring and related procedures
Work with Engineering and Operations to translate compliance requirements into product controls and automate high-volume manual processes
Escalate material compliance issues and provide clear recommendations to management
As the business grows, help shape the compliance operating model and support future compliance hires
What we're looking for
3–6 years of relevant AML, financial crime or compliance experience at a bank, PSP, MTO, fintech, exchange or other regulated financial-services business
Hands-on experience with business KYB, EDD, transaction monitoring, sanctions/PEP screening and customer risk assessment
Experience reviewing source of funds, source of wealth and transaction-purpose documentation
Strong understanding of cross-border payment risks and the ability to make practical, defensible risk decisions
Experience responding to bank, payment-partner, auditor or regulator compliance requests
Strong written communication and the ability to produce clear case notes, escalation memos and compliance responses
Confidence to challenge commercial teams where necessary without becoming an unnecessary blocker
Ability to operate independently in a fast-moving environment and improve processes rather than simply follow them
Nice to have
Experience in payments, FX, remittance, stablecoins or digital assets
Familiarity with on-chain transaction risk and blockchain analytics tools
Professional certification such as CAMS, ICA or equivalent
Experience helping implement or improve a compliance program during a period of growth
Performance measures
Timely and risk-appropriate customer and counterparty onboarding
Timely investigation and resolution of compliance cases and transaction reviews
Required periodic reviews completed within schedule
Accurate and timely responses to partner, audit and regulatory requests
No material compliance failures resulting from missed or improperly performed required controls
Measurable reduction in avoidable manual compliance work through better processes and tooling
