Barion is looking for a Compliance Specialist (AML & Merchant Risk) to join its Compliance team.

This is a hands-on, multifunctional role combining AML case management with merchant exposure control. You will independently manage standard cases, communicate directly with customers and external stakeholders, and make documented operational decisions within established internal rules and delegated authority.

This role requires a Hungarian speaker with a deep, current understanding of Hungary's legal and political landscape - you'll be interpreting Hungarian corporate and AML law day to day, so we're looking for someone who has lived that context.

Key responsibilities

AML case management

  • Conduct customer due diligence: verify corporate information, ownership structures and ultimate beneficial owners, and assess risk profiles.
  • Contact customers directly, including by phone, to clarify ownership structures and resolve missing or inconsistent information.
  • Monitor and investigate activity potentially related to money laundering, terrorist financing or fraud.
  • Liaise with customers, authorities, banks and acquiring partners on investigated cases, and handle law-enforcement information requests within applicable deadlines.
  • Document findings and decisions, escalating higher-risk or unresolved cases to the Compliance Officer.

Merchant exposure control

  • Handle payment disputes and chargeback cases, assessing evidence and submitting responses within applicable deadlines.
  • Communicate with merchants and acquiring partners on disputes and exposure-related matters.
  • Assess electronic-money redemption requests against Barion's risk framework, approving, rejecting or escalating in line with delegated authority.
  • Document exposure assessments and decisions in a clear, auditable way.

What we are looking for

  • A Hungarian law degree or advanced-stage Hungarian legal studies, plus at least two years of relevant experience (including practical exposure to AML or KYC/CDD).
  • Additional experience in fraud prevention, merchant risk, chargebacks or payment operations is an advantage.
  • Working knowledge of Hungarian company law and the AML/CTF framework.
  • Strong legal and analytical reasoning, attention to detail, and sound judgement about when to escalate.
  • Confidence communicating directly with customers, and strong written and spoken English.
  • Comfortable managing multiple case types and deadlines in a small, multifunctional team.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills and a proactive, quality-focused approach.

Who will succeed in this role?

You will enjoy this position if you combine legal and analytical thinking with a practical, hands-on approach and are comfortable examining corporate structures and transactions, investigating inconsistencies, asking focused questions, and owning cases from review to resolution.

You don't need to be a payments expert from day one, but you should be ready to learn how Barion's services work and how case decisions affect our regulatory obligations and financial exposure.

What we offer

  • Competitive salary and benefits, including cafeteria and private healthcare.
  • Exposure to a broad range of compliance and payment-risk matters rather than a narrowly defined AML function.
  • Close collaboration with senior colleagues and decision-makers.
  • A fast-moving fintech environment where your work and professional judgement have a visible impact.
  • A hybrid working arrangement with up to three home-office days per week.
  • A modern office at Corvin Technology and Science Park.

How to apply

Please submit your English-language CV to compliance@barion.com. A brief motivation of two or three sentences in your application or message is sufficient.

By submitting your application, you consent to Barion processing your personal data for the purposes of this recruitment process, in line with applicable data protection law.

We look forward to hearing from you.
