Senior Health Economist / Data Scientist

Working pattern: Flexible
Location: Remote or hybrid; we have offices in London and Northamptonshire

Dark Peak Analytics

Dark Peak Analytics is a specialist health economics modelling and software development consultancy. We combine scientific expertise, advanced analytical methods and technology-enabled solutions to support evidence-based healthcare decision-making.

Our team works with pharmaceutical and healthcare organisations to develop bespoke health economic models, decision-support platforms and analytical tools. We have particular strengths in early cost-effectiveness modelling, statistical & modelling software development, structured expert elicitation and technical training.

Dark Peak is now part of a wider organisation with Initiate Consultancy, creating opportunities to collaborate across health economics and outcomes research, health technology assessment, market access, evidence generation and analytics.

We are a small, highly technical and collaborative team. Our projects move quickly, our people have real ownership of their work, and we encourage curiosity, practical problem-solving and the development of new approaches. This is an exciting opportunity to join Dark Peak as we continue to grow our team, technology and client offering.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Health Economist / Data Scientist to support the development of health economic models, analytical platforms and software for health economics and outcomes research.

This role is ideal for a candidate with a strong quantitative background, excellent R / C++ programming skills and an interest in applying software development approaches to complex healthcare questions.

You will work on fast-paced client projects, contribute to the development of health economic modelling platforms in R and Shiny, and help create practical, robust and transparent tools that support evidence-based healthcare decisions. You will also have opportunities to contribute to research, teaching and the continued development of Dark Peak’s technical methods and software.

The role is fully remote, with optional access to offices in London and Northamptonshire and opportunities to meet colleagues at team events and conferences.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery and Modelling

  • Develop health economic modelling platforms in R and Shiny.
  • Build and maintain software and analytical tools for HEOR, primarily using R and C++.
  • Support the development of cost-effectiveness and budget-impact models for health technologies.
  • Contribute to model conceptualisation, implementation, validation and troubleshooting.
  • Conduct analyses of healthcare, clinical trial and other relevant data.
  • Critically review model structures, inputs, assumptions and outputs.
  • Support the adaptation of economic models to meet local market and decision-maker requirements.
  • Produce clear, reproducible and well-documented code, collaborating using Git and GitHub.
  • Contribute to testing, quality assurance and technical review processes.
  • Support migrating or redeveloping legacy Excel models into script-based modelling platforms.

Research, Innovation and Teaching

  • Contribute to research and the continued development of Dark Peak’s modelling methods, analytical modules and software tools.
  • Explore new approaches to health economic modelling, analytics automation and technology-enabled evidence generation.
  • Support the preparation and delivery of technical training and teaching materials.
  • Share knowledge across the team and contribute to a collaborative technical environment.
  • Maintain awareness of developments in health economics, data science, statistical programming and HEOR software development.

Client and Project Delivery

  • Work collaboratively with clients and colleagues to understand project requirements and translate them into practical technical solutions.
  • Provide clear project updates and communicate analytical methods and results to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Prepare high-quality models, documentation, presentations and other project deliverables.
  • Manage assigned activities across multiple fast-paced projects and meet agreed timelines.
  • Apply appropriate quality, referencing, documentation and version-control standards to all work.
  • Contribute to proposals and technical materials for new business opportunities.
  • Build trusted working relationships with clients and colleagues across the wider organisation.

Team Contribution and Development

  • Take ownership of your work while collaborating closely with health economists, statisticians and data scientists.
  • Support colleagues through technical discussion, peer review and knowledge sharing.
  • Proactively develop your health economics, programming, consulting and commercial skills.
  • Contribute positively to an inclusive, supportive and pragmatic working culture.
  • Manage your own workload and wellbeing effectively, seeking support when needed.

Essential Requirements

  • An MSc in health economics, economics, statistics, data science, operational research or another relevant quantitative discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of independently delivering quantitative analysis, health economic modelling or analytical software development in a consulting, pharmaceutical, academic, healthcare or comparable environment.
  • Strong programming skills in R.
  • Practical experience of Git and GitHub or comparable version-control tools.
  • Some previous experience of Microsoft Excel.
  • A sound understanding of quantitative research and analytical methods.
  • The ability to write clear, reproducible and well-documented code.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good project-management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a remote team.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • A PhD in health economics or another relevant quantitative discipline.
  • Previous experience of cost-effectiveness or budget-impact modelling.
  • Experience of developing applications or analytical interfaces using Shiny.
  • Experience of software development for HEOR.

  • Experience of healthcare data analysis or clinical trial interpretation.
  • Experience of consulting or other client-facing work.
  • Familiarity with model validation, quality assurance and technical documentation.
  • Experience of teaching, training or communicating technical concepts.
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages, including C++, would be an advantage.
