The salary range for this role is: $164,500 - $189,100
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Vice President of Finance, the Controller directs all financial and accounting activities of Howard Brown Health and its affiliated agencies. The role provides financial leadership and oversight across accounting, financial management, strategic initiatives, treasury, risk management, audit, internal controls, and compliance. Leverages industry knowledge and best practices to promote the mission, vision and strategy of Howard Brown Health as well as supports culture enhancement and change management efforts.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Financial Accounting & Reporting
- Directs and oversees all general accounting functions, including the general ledger, month-end and year-end close, account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and financial reporting.
- Establishes and maintains appropriate accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Analyzes financial results, identify significant variances, and communicate findings to leadership.
- Ensures timely and accurate financial reporting to the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, management, and other stakeholders.
- Ensures accounting activities comply with organizational, regulatory, and industry requirements.
Grants & Compliance
- Oversees accounting and financial reporting for federal, state, local, foundation, and other grants.
- Ensures grant expenditures are properly recorded, supported, allowable, and allocated in accordance with applicable requirements.
- Supports compliance with Uniform Guidance and other applicable grant regulations.
- Coordinates with grant managers and program leadership regarding budgets, expenditures, and financial reporting requirements.
- Maintains appropriate documentation for audits and grant monitoring activities.
Audit & Regulatory Compliance
- Leads the annual financial statement audit and coordinate with external auditors.
- Coordinates preparation of audit schedules, supporting documentation, and management responses.
- Supports to lead required federal, state, grant, and healthcare-related audits and reviews.
- Maintains compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
- Identifies financial, operational, and compliance risks and work with management to develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
- Partners with the leadership team in the development and monitoring of the annual operating budget.
- Partners with FP&A leadership to provide financial analysis and reporting to department leaders.
- Monitors departmental performance against approved budgets and investigate significant variances.
- Assists with forecasting, cash-flow projections, capital planning, and long-range financial planning.
Cash Management & Treasury
- Oversees daily cash reporting, bank reconciliations, and cash management activities.
- Effectively manage and monitor working capital and proactively identify anticipated surpluses or deficiencies to enable timely management action.
- Oversees banking relationships and ensure appropriate controls over disbursements and receipts.
- Analyzes financial performance, economic conditions, social forces, and government influences and assess their potential impact on organizational operations and financial performance.
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Manages, mentors, and develops finance and accounting staff through clear performance expectations, goal setting, resource allocation, coaching, and performance assessment.
- Evaluates staffing, resources, processes, and departmental priorities to ensure effective delivery of finance and accounting services.
- Evaluates opportunities to automate manual processes and strengthen financial reporting.
- Collaborates with clinical, operations, human resources, IT, revenue cycle, and other departments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or other related discipline, required. Masters degree in the same preferred.
- Minimum seven (7) years’ professional experience working in accounting; of the seven (7) years, minimum five (5) years managing a team required. Experience in FQHC and/or non-profit preferred.
- Experience administering a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and managing a unionized workforce required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES (K/S/A)
- Strong general business knowledge and acumen, with a demonstrated understanding of business drivers and business success factors
- Functional and applied knowledge of budget creation, management and monitoring
- Functional and proficient knowledge of various technologies including, but not limited to Excel, Sparkrock, etc
- Knowledge of state and federal clinical regulations and guidelines
- Knowledge of FQHCs and delivery of care to underserved communities
- Ability to work comfortably within LGBTQ+ setting and LGBTQ+ patient populations
- Ability to make formal and effective oral presentations
- Ability to evaluate procedures and issues and develop strategies and effective solutions
- Ability to plan, organize, and accomplish organizational goals and objectives
- Ability to handle and maintain highly confidential information with professional maturity
- Effective communication competencies including written, verbal and listening
- Strong knowledge of research approaches and the ability to apply relevant approach toward desired outcome(s)
- Strong problem-solving acumen and the ability to engage for supervisory support when appropriate
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of equity, inclusion and diversity concepts, and that they are broader than just race, ethnicity, and gender
