About Parsyl

Parsyl is a data-driven insurance company that helps businesses navigate the complexities of global supply chains. We combine underwriting expertise with modern technology to provide solutions that not only mitigate risk but also drive resilience, sustainability, and positive impact. Our mission is to create a more certain world by helping our customers manage risk and thrive in an ever-changing environment.

Parsyl offers a suite of A-rated cargo insurance solutions designed to meet the unique needs of businesses operating in global markets. With operations in both US and London insurance markets, Parsyl has its own managed syndicate at Lloyd's of London and leads a major marine cargo consortium. Parsyl focuses on insuring underserved food, beverage, and pharmaceutical commodities within the marine cargo sector. By integrating new data sources and advanced technology with traditional underwriting expertise, Parsyl empowers clients to build more resilient and adaptable supply chains.

Parsyl is based in Denver, CO, London, England, and New York City, NY.

About the Role

Parsyl's parent company is based in the US, with UK subsidiaries, and owns a US MGA and a Lloyd's syndicate. Our finance team is currently four-strong and growing as Parsyl expands, including adding new lines of business. As Controller, you'll own the US accounting function day to day: running the month-end close, building scalable accounting processes, owning controls, audit, and tax oversight, and supporting the US accounting team. You'll also bridge our UK entities' results into US GAAP for group reporting. You'll report to the Director of Finance & Accounting.

The role offers strong opportunities for personal growth, including hands-on exposure to the latest technology in practice and links to insurance syndicate finance.

In this role, you will:

Run month-end close and reporting

  • Run the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close for the US entities, including the calendar, checklist, and sign-off
  • Own consolidation of the US entities and intercompany accounting
  • Review all balance sheet account reconciliations, schedules, and journal entries prepared by the team each month, and hold every reconciliation to an audit-ready standard
  • Perform flux analysis and budget vs. actuals review, and deliver reviewed financials to the Director for management and board reporting
  • Prepare lender covenant compliance calculations and reporting
  • Own the UK GAAP to US GAAP bridge for the UK entities as they roll into group reporting, partnering with our UK finance team and outside service providers

Lead technical accounting and policy

  • Draft technical accounting memos on new and complex transactions under US GAAP, including insurance-specific guidance (ASC 944), revenue (ASC 606), leases (ASC 842), internal-use software (ASC 350-40), and stock compensation (ASC 718)
  • Evaluate new accounting standards and guidance, and recommend whether and how Parsyl adopts them
  • Maintain and update accounting policies

Own controls, treasury, and payments

  • Own the US control environment: document controls, maintain segregation of duties, and remediate gaps
  • Approve and release wires, vendor invoices, and Brex payments within the approval matrix
  • Design and maintain the approval and authority matrix, including delegated approval limits for the team
  • Oversee vendor master and bank detail changes
  • Monitor cash positions and support cash forecasting

Manage audit

  • Act as first-line contact for the external auditor, including PBC lists, walkthroughs, testing support, and routine queries

Own tax oversight

  • Review the ASC 740 tax provision and US federal and state returns prepared by outside advisors before sign-off, and prepare tax provision inputs
  • Manage outside tax advisor relationships, including responding to their requests and assumptions
  • Monitor state nexus as our footprint grows, and make sure we're registered and filing where required
  • Identify international tax considerations, such as VAT and withholding tax, and bring a recommendation, partnering with outside specialists

Improve systems and automation

  • Partner with product and engineering to automate data flows and reduce manual work in the close
  • Identify and drive close and process automation with the embedded product team

  • CPA, with Big 4 or national-firm audit experience
  • 8+ years of experience, including owning a close end-to-end and leading an external audit
  • A track record of reviewing others' work and building review processes for reconciliations and journal entries
  • Strong US GAAP technical depth, with the ability to research and write a position memo independently
  • US corporate tax experience, including reviewing provisions and returns, managing outside preparers, and identifying state nexus
  • International, multi-entity, and multi-currency consolidation experience (US parent with UK subsidiaries)
  • Experience designing and operating internal controls and supporting an external audit
  • Hands-on NetSuite experience or a comparable mid-market ERP
