Position Purpose:
This position leads the organization’s accounting operations and is responsible for a complete, accurate, and timely financial close. Establishes, documents, and enforces accounting policies, work standards, and internal controls, and appraises their soundness, adequacy, and compliance on an ongoing basis. Delivers the reconciled financial information, work papers and analysis required to support preparation of the organization’s internal and external financial statements. Directs the relationships with the external audit firms and supports the successful planning and execution of the annual audits and tax filings.

Position Purpose:
This position leads the organization’s accounting operations and is responsible for a complete, accurate, and timely financial close. Establishes, documents, and enforces accounting policies, work standards, and internal controls, and appraises their soundness, adequacy, and compliance on an ongoing basis. Delivers the reconciled financial information, work papers and analysis required to support preparation of the organization’s internal and external financial statements. Directs the relationships with the external audit firms and supports the successful planning and execution of the annual audits and tax filings.
Essential Functions:
- Direct the activities of the Accounting Department related to the planning, execution, and accurate and timely completion of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, and deliver complete and reconciled financial information required for the preparation of internal and external financial statements for HIMSS and related entities.
- Develop and enforce the financial policies required to safeguard the assets of the organization.
- Accountable for the accurate and timely management of all accounts receivable aging components, including billings, cash receipts application, and merchant accounting, with day-to-day oversight provided through the Assistant Controller.
- Accountable for the accurate and timely processing of disbursements, including accounts payable, purchase orders, petty cash, employee expense reports, cash control, core payroll processing, and corporate payroll tax compliance, with day-to-day oversight provided through the Assistant Controller.
- Accountable for the accounting activities of HIMSS international offices and entities, ensuring continuous adherence to policy and financial control requirements, including compliance with GAAP for currency translation and foreign tax liability (VAT).
- Establish and maintain the systems and controls that verify the integrity of the organization’s financial systems, processes and data.
- Lead financial system enhancements and implementations. Coordinate with third-party providers (e.g., NetSuite, Concur, ADP) and consultants to develop project plans for each enhancement or implementation, ensuring proper time management and adoption.
- Plan and direct the timely delivery of all audit work papers and reconciliations, monthly, quarterly, and annually, in good form. Provide independent quality assurance review of all account reconciliations and of interim financial information.
- Provides leadership and guidance to the CFO, CEO, and executive management team on accounting policies, financial reporting, and the application of GAAP.
- Continually improve the quality and transparency of the accounting records, reconciliations, and supporting schedules that underlie the financial reporting and disclosures of the organization and its subsidiaries.
- Direct fixed asset reporting and the fixed asset physical inventory process.
- Mentor, coach, and develop employees through orientation, training, goal setting and communication while ensuring team engagement and morale. Provide periodic performance feedback and appraisals.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned that contribute to the effectiveness of the department and to accomplish strategic goals and objectives.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting; MS or MBA preferred
- CPA preferred
- A minimum of ten (10) years (full-time) experience in industry or public accounting, including experience managing remote teams and with organizations with international operations.
- Exceptional accounting and analytical skills; deadline-focused; professional standard of ethics
- Proven ability to mentor and develop accounting professionals
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills; able to create initiatives and manage outcomes
- Demonstrable experience utilizing technology to meet financial close goals; NetSuite experience highly preferred
- Ability to communicate with co-workers, management, clients and others in a courteous and professional manner.
- Must be able to conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
