About Allume
We're empowering millions of people to access clean, affordable energy.
We're a Melbourne-based technology company, and our world-first technology, SolShare, unlocks rooftop solar for apartment residents. This smart hardware connects a single rooftop solar system to multiple units and common areas, fairly distributing solar energy so everyone gets their fair share. SolShare helps reduce both energy bills and carbon emissions.
SolShare removes the technical and ownership barriers that have long prevented apartment households from accessing rooftop solar. We built it here in Melbourne, and it's now connected over 13,000 apartments across Australia, the UK and the US. We're doubling our installation base each year, and we're aiming to connect over 100,000 apartments by 2029. SolShare now also brings shared battery optimisation to apartment buildings.
We're growing quickly, and our technology is becoming more capable as we scale. That means we need great people to help us build what comes next.
What we offer
- Hybrid work: You’ll be based in our Melbourne office, with the flexibility to work from home. We get a lot out of face-to-face time, so we look forward to seeing you in the office regularly.
- Flexibility: We’d prefer this role to be full time, but if you’re returning to work or want more time for life outside it, we’d still love you to apply. Part-time looks different for everyone, and we’re happy to talk about what would suit you.
- Leave: 25 days (5 weeks) of annual leave, plus a ‘Half-Day Friday’ every fortnight where the whole team logs off at lunch.
- Progressive parental leave: 15 weeks paid leave for primary carers and 5 weeks for secondary carers, with no minimum tenure.
- Wellbeing: Free, confidential counselling and support through our Employee Assistance Program.
- Options: Share options through our Employee Share Option Plan (ESOP).
About the role
You'll build the data behind the products and tools our installers, residents and teams use every day – turning real-world energy data from thousands of SolShare installations into clear, reliable information people can act on.
We're building a central Data & Analytics team to turn that data into products, insights and better ways of managing energy, and you'll join it as a Data Engineer, working across our product teams.
To start, you'll own the data for SolCentre, the dashboard installers and residents use to see how each SolShare installation is performing, and for the tools our service teams use to commission, monitor and support installations in Australia and the UK. You'll also help build the data foundations for SolOS, our energy management operating system – making SolShare a two-way platform that can optimise solar, batteries and energy flows across apartment buildings.
You'll own your work end to end – from working out what's needed through to release – with a high degree of independence, and work closely with more senior engineers on larger design choices.
What you’ll do
- Be the go-to data engineer in our product teams – starting with SolCentre and our service tools – working with product and commercial colleagues to turn their needs into working data features.
- Build and maintain the data pipelines and models behind the SolCentre dashboard – the installer, commercial and resident views of each installation.
- Build the data tools our service teams use to commission new installations, spot faults early and support sites in Australia and the UK.
- Help build the data pipelines and models behind SolOS, including the energy data that supports forecasting and optimisation of solar and batteries.
- Build and operate reliable data pipelines – validation, monitoring, error handling and backfills.
- Own data quality for the products you work on, so installers, residents and our own teams can trust what they see.
- Set up health checks and alerts across the fleet, so we find problems before our customers do.
- Work with our PostgreSQL, InfluxDB / Chronograf and AWS IoT Core + Timestream environments.
- Support company-wide data and reporting, including the reports our teams use to track installations and performance.
- Follow and help improve our security and data governance practices as we work towards ISO 27001.
- Write well-tested code, and take part in design discussions and code review – giving and receiving feedback that raises the quality of what we ship.
- Take on new data projects as our products and team grow – there’s plenty to build, and room to shape where you go next.
What we’re looking for
You don’t need to have worked in solar or energy before, and you don’t need to tick every box. What matters most is that the role excites you, you enjoy solving real-world problems and you know how to build reliable data systems.
You’ll have:
- Solid production Python and SQL skills, ideally with operational, device or time-series data.
- Experience building and running production data pipelines, including validation, monitoring and troubleshooting.
- Good working knowledge of PostgreSQL or a similar relational database – schema design, indexing and query tuning.
- Experience building data models or data features that other people or systems rely on, not just one-off analysis.
- Practical experience with AWS or another major cloud platform.
- Good software engineering habits, including version control, testing, code review and deployment.
- The ability to work with non-technical colleagues, ask good questions and turn their needs into practical solutions.
- The ability to estimate your own work and communicate progress clearly.
Nice to have
It’d be great if you also have experience with:
- Energy, connected devices (IoT), telemetry or other operational time-series data.
- Solar, batteries, distributed energy resources or energy markets.
- Forecasting and optimisation.
- InfluxDB, Amazon Timestream, TimescaleDB or similar time-series databases.
- AWS IoT, or event-driven and streaming systems.
- Data workflow tools such as Airflow, Dagster or dbt.
- Using AI coding assistants in your day-to-day work.
- Building data for customer-facing products, such as dashboards or APIs.
- Working in a growing product company where the right answer isn’t always obvious.
Right to work
You’ll need valid, unrestricted work rights in Australia. We can’t offer visa sponsorship.
Interview process
We aim to respond within two weeks, and the full process usually takes four to six weeks. There are three stages:
- Round 1: Online interview (15 minutes) – a short conversation about your experience, what you’re looking for and why Allume interests you.
- Round 2: Technical deep dive (1 hour) – an in-person discussion with the hiring manager about your technical experience and how you’d approach the problems in this role.
- Round 3: Values and team alignment (1.5 hours) – a final conversation with the hiring manager and the wider team, so both sides can work out whether Allume is the right fit.
