Show job description

Millions of people use Funda to find their next home. Behind every search, property listing and housing market insight lies an enormous amount of data. And that’s where you come in.

As a Data Engineer at Funda, you turn complex data into reliable, well-structured data models. You help our teams make better decisions and contribute to data products that make life easier for homebuyers, sellers and real estate agents. You'll work with BigQuery, DBT, Python and GCP, building on our recently revamped data warehouse. Love a good SQL challenge? And enjoy making complex data surprisingly simple? Then you might just feel right at home with us.

Your job in a nutshell

You'll join our Core Data Team. Together, you'll make sure Funda's data is reliable, accessible and ready to use. We've recently rebuilt our data warehouse following the principles of Kimball dimensional modelling. Now it's time for the next step: expanding our data models, improving monitoring and developing new data products.

Your work will provide the data that drives our strategic choices and product decisions, including those behind products like Waardecheck and Vraagscan. In doing so, you'll help people navigate one of the biggest decisions of their lives: buying or selling a home. And because you'll be part of a small team, your ideas won't get lost at the bottom of a backlog. You'll have plenty of ownership, room to experiment and a direct say in how we develop our data platform.

What you'll be doing

  • Build data models that actually make sense. You'll design, develop and maintain DBT models in BigQuery using Kimball star schemas, turning complex datasets into a reliable foundation for analysis.

  • Make good data even better. You'll develop DBT macros, automated tests and monitoring to improve data quality, performance and reliability. And yes, that includes being able to prove the numbers really do add up.

  • Keep the data flowing. You'll build and maintain ETL pipelines using Python, Airbyte and Azure, connecting different data sources to our data warehouse.

  • Automate the smart way. You'll improve CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and manage job orchestration through Cloud Run, making our processes more efficient and reliable.

  • Turn data into impact. You'll collaborate with data analysts and data scientists to unlock new insights, expand our analytics capabilities and develop machine learning pipelines.

Your team

You'll join the Core Data Team within Engineering, working closely with Data Engineer Esther Schrijer, Senior Data Scientist Edwin Thoen and Lead Service Owner Stephen Willems.

We're a small, pragmatic team with a big love for data. We enjoy solving complex puzzles, bouncing ideas off each other and coming up with solutions that actually work in practice. Making things complicated just for the sake of it? Not really our style. We work in two-week sprints, with short daily stand-ups, regular refinement sessions and sprint reviews where everyone shares what they've been working on. You'll also collaborate closely with data analysts across our product teams. That way, you'll make sure the data you develop doesn't just sit neatly in our data warehouse, but actually gets put to good use.

“We have so much interesting data, and I love bringing it all together and turning it into something valuable for our different users. Because we're a small team, we have a lot of freedom to decide what we work on. You can really take ownership from start to finish, from data ingestion to data modelling. And there's plenty of room to learn new things along the way.”

Esther Schrijer, Data Engineer at Funda

Why you'll love being a Data Engineer at Funda

  • Data you won't find anywhere else.

Funda has the most comprehensive dataset on housing demand in the Netherlands. That means you'll work with data that offers unique insights into how people search for properties, discover homes and ultimately choose their next place to call home.

  • Build things people actually use.

Your data models won't just sit somewhere in a data warehouse. They'll help our teams build better features and power products that provide valuable insights for sellers, real estate agents and home seekers.

  • A modern platform, ready for your ideas.

With our recently revamped, Kimball-based data warehouse, there's plenty of interesting work waiting for you. From developing new DBT models to improving our analytics macros and monitoring, you'll help shape the future of our data platform.

  • Small team. Big impact.

You'll have the freedom to improve the way we work, bring fresh perspectives and make important technical decisions. We love curious, pragmatic colleagues who enjoy figuring things out together.

This is you

You're a curious, detail-oriented Data Engineer who loves getting to the bottom of how things work. You appreciate well-structured data models, reliable pipelines and the little details that make sure the data really does add up.

You also know that great data engineering is about more than just writing code. It's about understanding what the business needs and building solutions others can rely on.

What you bring to the table:

  • At least 4 years of relevant experience in data engineering, including commercial data modelling, plus a bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent hands-on experience.

  • Excellent SQL skills (you genuinely enjoy writing SQL), hands-on experience with DBT, BigQuery, GCP and Python, and a solid understanding of Kimball dimensional modelling.

  • Strong knowledge of statistics, ETL, data optimisation and performance, including working efficiently with large datasets.

  • Experience with Git, Docker, data governance and responsible data management, including GDPR principles, access controls and data retention policies.

  • A curious, detail-oriented mindset and experience with clickstream or event-based data modelling. You're fluent in Dutch and comfortable communicating in English.

  • You're currently living in the Netherlands and speak fluent English (Dutch is a plus).

Experience with Azure DevOps CI/CD, Cloud Run, Kubernetes or machine learning algorithms is a nice bonus. Familiarity with AI coding tools like Codex or Claude Code, or experience with R, is a plus too. You don't need to tick every single box. But a love for SQL? That's pretty much non-negotiable.

Love being spoiled? Well, we love spoiling you!

  • A salary between € 4.512,23 - € 6.083,64 per month, based on a 40 hours per week contract

  • Annual bonus of up to 1.5 times your monthly salary

  • Hybrid working: minimum 40% in the office

  • 25 paid days off a year and the possibility to buy more

  • Working hours (32/36/40 per week) are negotiable

  • 60% pension coverage

  • A learning budget of up to € 2000 per year

  • A net monthly reimbursement of up to € 85 for your phone and internet costs

  • A net work-from-home allowance of € 2.45 per day

  • Full coverage of your travel costs for office days (if you live over 5 km away)

  • Unlimited access to mental support via OpenUp for both work-related and personal matters, including phone consultations with psychologists

  • The opportunity to take an (unpaid) 3-month sabbatical every 3 years

  • Contribution to your membership at selected gyms and regular massages at the office

  • Office lunch freshly prepared by our in-house chefs for a small, legally required contribution deducted from your salary

  • Parties and team outings: from drinks on boats to graffiti workshops. And a present for your birthday, or just because – because why not?
