Job Description

Our client is seeking an experienced Data Scientist for an initial 12-week contract to deliver a hands-on data science initiative focused on predictive analytics, machine learning model development and extracting meaningful insights from complex datasets.

Job Responsibilities

• Analyse and interpret complex datasets to identify patterns, trends and opportunities for predictive modelling.
• Design, develop and assess machine learning models using Python and appropriate statistical techniques.
• Prepare and transform raw data, addressing quality issues and creating relevant features to support effective modelling.
• Collaborate with technical teams and business stakeholders to translate requirements into practical data science solutions.
• Evaluate different machine learning algorithms, establishing performance benchmarks and identifying suitable approaches.
• Investigate advanced modelling techniques, including neural networks, where they offer measurable improvements.
• Produce clear technical documentation, maintain well-structured Python code and communicate modelling results to relevant stakeholders.
• Deliver a functional machine learning proof of concept, supported by documented Python code, model evaluation results and recommendations for potential future development.

Experience Required

• Minimum 5 years' commercial experience in Data Science, Machine Learning or a closely related discipline.
• Strong Python programming skills with proven experience developing and evaluating predictive models.
• Extensive knowledge of supervised learning techniques, statistical analysis and machine learning methodologies.
• Demonstrated experience in data cleansing, exploratory analysis, feature engineering and model validation.
• Ability to work independently with complex, incomplete or unfamiliar datasets and determine appropriate analytical approaches.
• Strong practical experience in traditional machine learning and predictive analytics, with an emphasis on developing and evaluating models rather than generative AI applications.
• Strong understanding of model performance measurement, interpretability and the limitations of different algorithms.
• Experience delivering end-to-end data science solutions, from initial analysis through to model development and technical handover.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable Skills

• Previous experience delivering machine learning proof-of-concept projects or experimental data science initiatives.
• Exposure to data science applications within technical, engineering or research-focused environments.
• Knowledge of deep learning frameworks and neural network architectures.
• Experience applying predictive modelling to optimisation challenges.
• Familiarity with experimental datasets and identifying relationships between multiple variables.
• Experience assessing the feasibility of scaling machine learning solutions beyond initial development.
• Ability to define analytical hypotheses and evaluate potential solutions through structured experimentation.

Educational Requirements

Third-level degree or bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or a related discipline.
