Responsibilities
We are seeking an experienced PostgreSQL Architect to design, migrate, and optimize enterprise databases from Oracle and SQL Server to PostgreSQL. The ideal candidate will have strong experience designing high-transaction, multi-tenant PostgreSQL environments and leading complex database migrations with minimal downtime. This role requires a cloud-agnostic mindset. Candidates may have experience with PostgreSQL on any cloud platform or in self-managed environments. They should be able to design solutions that support portability while making informed use of cloud-managed database services where appropriate.
PostgreSQL Development and Performance
- Design scalable and reliable PostgreSQL architectures for high-volume transactional workloads, with a cloud-agnostic way
- Define strategies for indexing, partitioning, connection pooling, replication, and query optimization
- Analyze query execution plans and tune database performance, including autovacuum, locking, concurrency, and resource utilization
- Perform capacity planning and establish performance benchmarks for production workloads
- Define database architecture standards, coding guidelines, naming conventions, and technical review processes.
Database Migration
- Lead end-to-end migrations from Oracle and/or SQL Server to PostgreSQL, including discovery, assessment, schema conversion, data migration, validation, and cutover
- Assess source databases for compatibility gaps, migration complexity, technical dependencies, and performance risks
- Convert and refactor database objects, including stored procedures, functions, triggers, sequences, views, packages, and custom types
- Translate PL/SQL or T-SQL logic into appropriate PostgreSQL solutions using PL/pgSQL and other suitable approaches
- Define migration strategies, including big-bang, phased, or parallel-run approaches, with rollback plans and downtime requirements
- Work with QA and application teams to perform data reconciliation, functional testing, and performance benchmarking.
Multi-Tenant Design
- Design PostgreSQL solutions using appropriate tenant isolation models, such as database-per-tenant, schema-per-tenant, or shared schema with row-level security
- Evaluate each model for security, performance, scalability, operational complexity, and cost
- Establish tenant-aware monitoring, capacity planning, backup, and recovery practices.
Cloud and Operations
- Architect PostgreSQL deployments on any cloud platform, including managed PostgreSQL services or self-managed installations on virtual machines or Kubernetes
- Design for portability across cloud environments, while documenting any dependencies on provider-specific services or features
- Define high availability, backup, point-in-time recovery, disaster recovery, and replication strategies based on business requirements
- Partner with Cloud Operations and Security teams on monitoring, patching, access control, auditing, incident response, and cost optimization
- Develop automation and operational runbooks for deployment, migration, validation, backup, and recovery.
Collaboration and Leadership
- Collaborate with developers on data access patterns, ORM configuration, transaction handling, and query design
- Document architecture decisions, migration plans, risks, and technical trade-offs
- Mentor DBAs and engineers and help build PostgreSQL capabilities across the team
Education / Qualifications
- 8 or more years of experience in database engineering, with at least 4 years of substantial hands-on PostgreSQL experience
- Proven experience designing and supporting PostgreSQL databases for high-volume transactional workloads or large datasets
- Hands-on experience migrating databases from Oracle and/or SQL Server to PostgreSQL
- Strong proficiency in PostgreSQL SQL and PL/pgSQL, with experience reading and converting PL/SQL or T-SQL
- Experience designing and operating multi-tenant database environments
- Deep understanding of query planning, indexing, partitioning, vacuum and autovacuum, locking, concurrency, and connection management
- Experience designing and supporting replication, high availability, backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery
- Experience running PostgreSQL in at least one cloud environment. Experience on any cloud provider is acceptable
- Strong scripting or automation skills using SQL, Bash, or Python
- Experience in Kubernetes and Containers platform
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and cross-team collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with migration tools such as AWS Schema Conversion Tool, AWS DMS, ora2pg, pgloader, or Azure Database Migration Service
- Experience with managed PostgreSQL services such as Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL or RDS for PostgreSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or Google Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL
- Experience with PostgreSQL backup and recovery using AWS Backup for supported resources, other cloud-native backup services, or PostgreSQL-native utilities
- Experience with self-managed PostgreSQL on Linux virtual machines, containers, or Kubernetes
- Familiarity with connection poolers such as PgBouncer and monitoring tools such as pg_stat_statements, Prometheus, or Grafana
- Experience identifying alternatives for Oracle- or SQL Server-specific features during migration
- Experience in regulated environments with database security, auditing, and compliance requirements
- Relevant database or cloud certifications are a plus.
Core Competencies
- Architectural judgment: Balances performance, scalability, cost, security, maintainability, and migration risk
- Ownership: Takes responsibility from architecture and migration through production readiness and support
- Collaboration: Works effectively across DBA, Development, QA, Security, and Cloud Operations teams
- Communication: Clearly explains technical decisions and trade-offs to different audiences
- Mentorship: Shares knowledge and strengthens PostgreSQL skills across the organization.
