Description:
Under the direction of the Manager, Systems Engineering, the Database Developer is responsible for improving the performance, reliability, security, and maintainability of ImageTrend product databases. This role serves as a key partner to Development and DBA teams by proactively reviewing database changes prior to release, monitoring production database performance, optimizing queries and execution plans, and implementing effective indexing and database design strategies. The Database Developer helps ensure database environments are scalable, secure, recoverable, and operationally reliable while supporting continuous improvement through automation, documentation, monitoring, and best practices. This role also provides database administration and operational support, including incident response, maintenance, backup and recovery, compliance support, capacity planning, and platform optimization across SQL Server and Azure-based data platforms.
What You'll Do:
- Review SQL queries, stored procedures, schema changes, and database deployment scripts before application releases, with emphasis on performance, scalability, correctness, and operational risk
- Assess execution plans and analyze query performance using estimated and actual row counts, join strategies, statistics, parameter sensitivity, blocking risks, memory grants, I/O, and CPU utilization
- Monitor query performance across production environments using approved monitoring and observability tools to identify regressions, recurring bottlenecks, high-resource workloads, and opportunities for optimization
- Partner with developers and DBAs to rewrite and tune queries, improve data-access patterns, validate changes using representative workloads, and provide database-focused review and performance guidance
- Recommend, test, and implement indexing strategies in coordination with Development and DBA stakeholders while balancing performance, storage utilization, maintenance costs, and overall database efficiency
- Provide database design guidance related to tables, keys, constraints, partitioning, data types, indexing strategies, data distribution, and database development standards
- Support performance testing and post-release validation activities by documenting findings, recommendations, tradeoffs, performance baselines, and release-readiness criteria
- Coach developers on SQL development best practices, execution-plan interpretation, and database performance principles
- Monitor and maintain the health, availability, security, capacity, and reliability of production and non-production database environments
- Administer and support SQL Server and Azure data platforms, including Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, Hyperscale, Microsoft Fabric, and Azure Databricks
- Support backup and recovery, disaster recovery, high availability, maintenance, patching, and recovery validation activities
- Investigate database incidents involving performance degradation, blocking, deadlocks, resource saturation, failed jobs, connectivity issues, storage concerns, and data integrity issues
- Support database recommendations with execution plans, monitoring data, testing results, workload evidence, and documented operational risk assessments
- Automate database maintenance, monitoring, validation, and reporting processes using approved tools and scripting technologies
- Maintain technical documentation related to database configurations, operational procedures, performance decisions, and recovery processes
- Support database security, access controls, encryption requirements, audit activities, compliance obligations, and HIPAA-related controls
- Contribute to capacity planning and cost optimization efforts related to database compute, storage, and platform resources
- Participate in an on-call rotation for critical database support and incident response after the initial training period and as required
- Travel to orientation, industry or company events, training opportunities, or other onsite meetings as required
- Perform additional duties or tasks as assigned
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- Proven professional experience as a Database Developer or similar role supporting enterprise software, SaaS applications, cloud-based solutions, database administration, performance engineering, data integration, or related technology environments
- Advanced SQL proficiency with demonstrated experience reviewing, troubleshooting, optimizing, and tuning complex queries, stored procedures, and database workloads
- Hands-on experience interpreting SQL Server execution plans and diagnosing performance issues involving indexing, statistics, blocking, deadlocks, CPU, memory, storage, and I/O bottlenecks
- Experience designing, evaluating, and implementing indexing strategies for transactional and analytical workloads
- Experience supporting production database environments and partnering effectively with software development, infrastructure, operations, and database administration teams
- Proven working knowledge of database security, access controls, encryption, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, high-availability solutions, data integrity practices, and regulatory compliance requirements
- Proven experience with SQL Server, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Hyperscale, Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Query Store, and related monitoring or diagnostic tools
- Experience supporting ETL/ELT processes, data warehouses, lakehouse architectures, data lakes, dimensional modeling, star-schema designs, and large-scale datasets
- Experience automating database administration, monitoring, maintenance, validation, and reporting processes using PowerShell, T-SQL, CI/CD pipelines, scripting languages, or related tools
- Strong ability to analyze information, troubleshoot issues, and identify effective solutions with attention to detail
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to share technical information and collaborate with team members across functions
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize work, manage multiple assignments, and meet established deadlines
