Database Manager
Salary: Up to £90,000 per annum + Bonus
Swindon/London – Hybrid
We are seeking an experienced Database Manager to take ownership of our database stability, strategy, architecture, and long-term evolution. This is a senior, high-impact role for someone who combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership skills, and who is comfortable operating with autonomy while carrying significant responsibility for the stability and scalability of the business.
You will have a primary specialism in PostgreSQL on AWS, including Aurora Provisioned and Aurora Serverless, alongside solid working exposure to Oracle and Java application workloads running against both platforms. You'll lead a squad of DBAs operating within an agile delivery model, balancing project and portfolio commitments, reactive incident response, and business-as-usual operations.
This role sits at the intersection of engineering, architecture, and stakeholder management — you'll be as comfortable deep in query plans and replication topology as you are presenting a business case for disruptive architectural change to senior leadership.
Why This Role Matters?
The database layer underpins the stability, performance, and scalability of our entire business. This role carries real weight — your decisions on architecture, strategy, and team direction will directly shape our ability to grow, innovate, and remain resilient. You'll have the autonomy to lead meaningful change, backed by the trust and support of senior leadership.
What you will be doing:
Strategy & Architecture
- Own and evolve the organisation's database strategy, with a particular focus on PostgreSQL in AWS (Aurora Provisioned and Serverless architectures).
- Define and maintain database architecture standards, patterns, and roadmaps that support scalability, resilience, and cost-efficiency.
- Act as a key technical authority on database platform evolution, including migration, modernization, and consolidation initiatives.
- Maintain working knowledge of Oracle environments and Java application interaction patterns against both Oracle and PostgreSQL, ensuring cross-platform consistency and best practice.
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop an agile squad of Database Administrators, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
- Manage competing priorities across strategic projects, portfolio deliverables, reactive/incident-driven work, and day-to-day BAU operations.
- Set clear objectives, provide technical direction, and support the professional growth of team members.
Operational Excellence
- Ensure high standards of database stability, performance, security, and availability across production and non-production environments.
- Drive data-driven decision-making, using metrics, monitoring, and root-cause analysis to guide improvements and prioritisation.
- Maintain rigorous attention to detail across configuration, change management, and operational processes to minimise risk to critical systems.
Stakeholder Engagement & Influence
- Act as an active, credible participant in architectural review boards and product-level technical conversations.
- Present technical findings, risks, and recommendations to senior stakeholders, including cases for potentially disruptive but necessary changes.
- Build trust and influence across engineering, product, and leadership teams to align database strategy with broader business objectives.
Delivery & Governance
- Operate effectively within enterprise-level software delivery lifecycles (SDLC), ensuring database considerations are embedded early in the delivery process.
- Ensure compliance with governance, security, and audit requirements relevant to database platforms.
What you will bring:
Essential
- Proven track record leading or managing a Database Administration function or team.
- Deep hands-on expertise with PostgreSQL, including production experience with AWS Aurora (Provisioned and Serverless).
- Working knowledge of Oracle database administration.
- Understanding of Java application workloads and how they interact with relational databases (connection pooling, transaction behaviour, performance tuning from the application side).
- Experience working within enterprise-level software delivery lifecycles and agile delivery frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage an agile squad, balancing strategic and reactive workloads.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with experience presenting to and influencing senior leadership.
- Strong analytical mindset with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
- High attention to detail and a rigorous approach to risk and change management.
- Ability to work autonomously, exercising sound judgement without close oversight.
- Experience delivering complex, multi-faceted transformation projects.
Desirable
- AWS certifications (e.g., Database Specialty, Solutions Architect).
- Exposure to PCI DSS or similar regulatory frameworks.
- Experience with database migration or modernization programmes (e.g., Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migrations).
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and automation tooling for database provisioning and management, including Flyay.
- Experience contributing to or leading architectural review boards.
Personal Attributes
- A confident communicator who can distil complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
- Comfortable challenging the status quo and advocating for change even when it's disruptive.
- Pragmatic and resilient — able to shift fluidly between strategic thinking and hands-on problem-solving.
- A natural leader who builds trust through technical credibility and consistent delivery.
- Genuinely accountable for outcomes, with a strong sense of ownership over the systems they steward.
