Job Title: Database Platform Engineer
LOCATION: Hybrid – Richardson Texas
POSITION TYPE: 6 months (direct to hire)
OVERVIEW:
3+ years of progressively responsible experience supporting enterprise database platforms. As a Senior Database Platform Engineer, you will design, implement, administer, secure, and support Dallas County’s enterprise database platforms across on-premises and cloud environments. You’ll own the full lifecycle of our relational database platforms – Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and AWS database technologies – from architecture and provisioning through performance optimization, high availability, disaster recovery, security, automation, and operational support. Your mission is to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure database solutions that keep Dallas County business operations running.
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Database Administration & Operations: Administer, monitor, and maintain enterprise database platforms; install, configure, upgrade, patch, and support database environments.
- Availability & Recovery: Ensure database availability, performance, backup, recovery, and security, supporting high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity objectives.
- Production Support: Troubleshoot production issues and participate in the on-call support rotation.
- Platform Design & Solutioning: Design and implement database platform solutions for new and existing applications, and support cloud database services and application modernization initiatives.
- Migrations & Platform Improvements: Support database migrations, upgrades, integrations, and platform improvements, and participate in architecture reviews and technology evaluations.
- Automation & Standards: Develop database standards, automation, monitoring, deployment processes, and standardized operational procedures.
- Performance & Capacity Management: Improve database reliability, performance, and operational efficiency through capacity planning, performance tuning, and health assessments.
- Documentation: Maintain operational and technical documentation, metadata, and engineering standards.
- Technology Research: Research and recommend emerging database technologies and best practices.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with application developers, cloud engineers, infrastructure, cybersecurity, vendors, and business stakeholders, providing technical guidance during project planning, implementation, and production support.
- Data Initiatives: Support data integration, reporting, analytics, and enterprise data initiatives.
- Mentorship: Mentor team members and contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of progressively responsible experience supporting enterprise database platforms.
- Experience with relational database management systems, database administration, performance tuning, backup and recovery, and production support.
- Knowledge of relational database technologies, database design principles, database security, high availability, and disaster recovery.
- Knowledge of performance tuning, monitoring, automation, and scripting.
- Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and AWS and Azure cloud database platforms.
- Experience with cloud database platforms, automation, or DevOps practices (preferred).
- Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and develop practical solutions.
- Strong analytical, communication, organizational, and customer service skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while working independently and collaboratively.
- Availability to work evenings or weekends and participate in an on-call rotation; occasional travel between Dallas County facilities may be required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
