Company Overview:

MSIG USA is the US-based subsidiary of MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Inc., one of the world’s top P&C carriers and a global Class 15 insurer, with A+ ratings and a reach that spans 40+ countries and regions. Leveraging our 350-year heritage, MSIG USA brings the financial strength, expertise, and global footprint to offer commercial insurance solutions that address your business’s unique risks.

Summary / Job Purpose:

The Deputy CUO, Portfolio Strategy & Management is the senior enterprise leader responsible for turning underwriting strategy and risk appetite into active portfolio decisions. This role provides an enterprise view across businesses with leadership of portfolio performance including portfolio mix, concentration, capacity deployment and strategic portfolio actions. This encompasses all MSIG USA product lines. The role complements, rather than replaces, the P&L and market accountability of business and product underwriting leaders.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead enterprise underwriting portfolio management, including performance, mix, concentration, volatility and emerging portfolio issues.
  • Drive portfolio optimization and capacity deployment across products and channels in alignment with the CUO’s risk appetite and strategic direction.
  • Develop cross-business portfolio insights and identify opportunities for profitable growth, diversification and corrective action.
  • Coordinate strategic underwriting planning and help connect portfolio performance to longer-term business priorities.
  • Lead distribution and broker portfolio analysis where an enterprise view improves underwriting decision-making.
  • Partner with Actuarial to incorporate pricing adequacy, loss-cost trends and portfolio economics into portfolio decisions while preserving Actuarial’s independent challenge.
  • Partner with Reinsurance on capacity, volatility, aggregation and risk-transfer considerations while Reinsurance remains directly aligned to the CUO.
  • Provide executive leadership to Risk Engineering, ensuring risk-selection, loss-prevention, engineering and emerging-risk insights are integrated directly into enterprise portfolio strategy and underwriting decisions.
  • Partner closely with the Deputy CUO, Underwriting Excellence, Actuarial, Reinsurance, Risk Engineering, Legal/Compliance, the MSIG international CUO and senior leadership to translate enterprise portfolio insights into underwriting standards, priorities and actions.
  • Provide portfolio challenge to business/product leaders while preserving their ownership of P&L, growth, market strategy, broker/MGA commercial relationships and underwriting execution within authority.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, risk management, insurance, or a related field experience; advanced degree highly desirable.
  • 15+ years of progressive specialty or Commercial P&C underwriting experience, including significant enterprise or senior leadership responsibility.
  • Broad underwriting and portfolio-management expertise across multiple Commercial P&C products, channels, and business units.
  • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise portfolio management, including performance oversight, portfolio review, mix, concentration, volatility, and corrective action.
  • Deep experience evaluating portfolio economics and underwriting performance across products, channels and business units.
  • Proven ability to interpret underwriting performance and make enterprise-level decisions related to capacity deployment, portfolio mix, concentration, growth, and corrective action.
  • Experience integrating underwriting, Actuarial, Reinsurance, Risk Engineering, distribution, and portfolio analytics perspectives into strategic business decisions.
  • Commercially oriented and analytically strong, with the judgment and credibility to challenge and influence senior business and underwriting leaders.
  • Strong executive communication, enterprise leadership, decision-making, and change-leadership skills.

Salary: The base pay range is $275,000.00 - 360,000.00. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
