Position Summary:
Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) seeks an experienced leader to become the Deputy Director of Expanded Learning. This role leads program quality and performance across nearly 100 EXL programs in seven Bay Area school districts. Reporting to the Executive Director of Expanded Learning, the Deputy Director translates organizational strategy into effective program delivery, strong district partnerships, and sound regional budget performance.
The ideal candidate is a systems thinker who anticipates needs and takes initiative, keeps teams aligned, brings deep knowledge of Bay Area school districts, has expertise in high-quality Expanded Learning program design, and has demonstrated ability to identify implementation gaps and sustain improvements.
Central to this role is developing leaders who deliver results through their own teams. The Deputy Director coaches Associate Directors to exercise sound judgment, strengthen Program Manager leadership, and hold teams accountable for student experiences and program outcomes.
The Deputy Director partners closely with the Operations Director, who leads administrative systems, compliance processes, and financial tracking, and the Training & Development Director, who leads learning and development for more than 900 EXL staff.
Core Competencies & Key Responsibilities
- Leadership Development & Coaching: Coaches and mentors Associate Directors to strengthen leadership capacity, serves as a thought partner, motivates the team, builds strong relationships, and fosters a joyful team culture.
- Accountability & Rigorous Execution: Sets clear performance expectations, identifies regional implementation gaps, and ensures leadership teams follow through on strategic commitments with measurable results.
- Strategic Planning & Vision: Translates BACR’s organization-wide priorities into actionable regional plans while balancing district needs, resource allocation, and long-term sustainability.
- Program Quality & Continuous Improvement: Uses site observations, SEL PQA findings, outcome data, and stakeholder feedback to systematically assess and elevate the quality of student experiences.
- Financial & Resource Stewardship: Exercises strong fiscal judgment—navigating complex budgets, anticipating financial risks, and aligning resource decisions with program quality and regional viability.
- District & Community Partnership: Leverages deep familiarity with Bay Area school district dynamics to build trust, resolve competing priorities, and sustain high-impact partnerships.
- Equity & Inclusive Practice: Applies an equity lens to all operational decisions, directly addressing barriers to participation and elevating diverse perspectives among students, families, and staff.
- Cross-Functional Change Management: Collaborates seamlessly with Operations, Training, Finance, and Executive Leadership to clarify responsibilities and guide teams through sustainable organizational change.
- Integrity & Exemplary Leadership: Models sound judgment, transparency, and direct communication—welcoming feedback, taking ownership of results, and addressing complex issues constructively.
Qualifications & Required Experience
- Senior Leadership Experience: Minimum 7+ years of progressive leadership experience in Expanded Learning, youth development, education, or non-profit administration, with at least 3+ years managing multi-site programs or high-level managers.
- District & Regional Expertise: Demonstrated track record working within or in deep partnership with Bay Area school districts, navigating competing priorities and stakeholder relationships.
- People & Leadership Development: Proven success in coaching, mentoring, and developing senior leaders to build internal capacity, drive accountability, and resolve team performance issues.
- Quality & Assessment Standards: Direct experience with continuous quality improvement frameworks (e.g., SEL PQA, site observations, and data-driven outcomes) to elevate student outcomes and program quality.
- Fiscal Management: Demonstrated ability to manage complex, multi-million-dollar regional budgets, anticipate financial risks, and ensure grant compliance and sustainability.
