ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Apertura is seeking an experienced Design Engineer to support the engineering and development of UL-listed low-voltage power distribution equipment for the US market.
This position focuses on translating customer orders, technical specifications, and engineering requirements into complete, manufacturable, and compliant switchboard designs.
The role covers both electrical and mechanical engineering, with responsibilities spanning technical design, documentation, component selection, manufacturing coordination, and engineering support.
You will work closely with engineering, manufacturing, sales, and production teams, contributing to recurring standard configurations while supporting more complex and customized projects.
This is a fully remote, full-time opportunity for a professional based in Latin America who can work US Central Time business hours.
Strong technical communication skills and fluent English are essential, as the position requires regular collaboration, virtual meetings, design reviews, and direct interaction with international teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. UL 891 Switchboard Design – Core Responsibilities
- Develop complete engineering design packages from sales orders through final release, including one-line diagrams, elevations, bus layouts, ampacity calculations, bracing, device selection, nameplate schedules, and bills of materials (BOMs).
- Prepare technical submittals, manufacturing drawings, and as-built documentation.
- Interpret Division 26 specifications and customer-provided one-line diagrams, identifying technical discrepancies and non-compliant requirements.
- Verify short-circuit and withstand ratings, SCCR labeling, series ratings, working clearances, and compliance with NEC Articles 408 and 110.26.
- Follow established UL procedures, engineering standards, and drawing revision-control practices.
- Ensure all engineering deliverables are accurate, complete, and ready for manufacturing.
2. Mechanical Design and Standard Configurations
- Develop 3D layouts of enclosures, switchboard sections, and bus systems.
- Prepare mechanical drawings and documentation suitable for manufacturing and fabrication.
- Develop and maintain standardized engineering details to improve efficiency across recurring switchboard configurations.
- Support enclosure designs, including NEMA 3R and seismic-rated applications.
- Evaluate and cross-reference components from Siemens, ABB, Eaton, and LS.
- Identify component obsolescence and alternative sourcing opportunities.
- Provide technical support to sales and estimating teams for non-standard engineering requirements.
3. Manufacturing and Technical Support
- Collaborate with manufacturing and production teams to ensure designs consider fabrication requirements, assembly processes, and practical manufacturing constraints.
- Provide technical guidance and resolve engineering questions from sales and production teams.
- Support troubleshooting and root-cause analysis related to field issues, startup challenges, and warranty claims.
- Incorporate lessons learned and engineering improvements into future designs.
- Provide remote engineering support for field service and commissioning activities when required.
FIRST-YEAR EXPECTATIONS
First 90 Days
Understand internal drawing standards, UL procedures, and standard configurations. Begin producing standard engineering packages under supervision and participate in drawing reviews and manufacturing walkthroughs.
By 6 Months
Independently manage standard engineering projects from initial design through release, with appropriate technical review. Deliver submittals and revisions within established timelines.
By 12 Months
Take ownership of more complex and non-standard designs, contribute to engineering improvements, and develop reusable design standards that increase team productivity.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should meet most of the required qualifications and demonstrate substantial experience in UL 891 switchboard design. Preferred qualifications are considered an advantage rather than a strict requirement.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent professional experience designing this type of equipment.
- At least 3 years of experience designing low-voltage power distribution equipment, including switchboards, switchgear, panelboards, or motor control centers (MCCs), preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with both electrical and mechanical design.
- Working knowledge of UL 891 standards and applicable National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements.
- Strong understanding of bus ampacity, bracing, short-circuit and withstand ratings, SCCR, series ratings, and protective device coordination inputs.
- Ability to interpret Division 26 specifications and customer one-line diagrams and translate them into complete manufacturing-ready engineering packages.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD.
- Experience with 3D design software such as Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Availability to work full-time during US Central Time business hours.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Direct experience working with UL certification files, UL field representatives, inspections, findings, and procedure maintenance.
- Experience with UL 1558 metal-enclosed switchgear or ANSI/IEEE C37.20.2 metal-clad medium-voltage equipment.
- Data center power distribution experience, including floor PDUs, RPPs, branch circuit monitoring, or colocation and hyperscaler vendor qualification.
- Experience developing standardized product families, engineering configurators, rules-based designs, or technical product catalogs.
- Familiarity with Siemens WL/VL, ABB Emax/Tmax, Eaton Magnum and Series C, or LS circuit breaker platforms.
- Experience with arc flash and coordination studies using SKM, ETAP, or EasyPower.
- Knowledge of arc-resistant switchgear construction.
- Experience with IBC/OSHPD seismic certification, UL 508A, generator paralleling, or switchgear controls.
- Experience managing engineering BOMs and item masters within ERP systems.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent local professional certification.
