About the role:

Rabobank’s Technology team within the COO Domain is at the heart of enabling & supporting our business across Australia & New Zealand. From securing digital infrastructure to delivering scalable data & technology solutions, the team drives innovation, stability, security & collaboration across the organisation. The Online Banking squad within Technology has an opportunity for a Design Lead.

This isn’t a traditional, hands-off architecture role. We need someone with strong software engineering foundations who can turn business requirements into clear technical designs, guide engineers through implementation & get into the technical detail when needed.

Working closely with Engineering, Product & Architecture, you’ll provide design leadership across our Client Experience technology area & help us build secure, scalable & sustainable digital banking solutions.

Top Role Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

• Lead technical design decisions across Online & Mobile Banking
• Translate business & product requirements into practical high & low-level designs
• Guide engineers on architecture, technology choices, patterns & implementation
• Partner with Product, Engineering & Architecture to assess technical risks, dependencies & cross-squad impacts
• Design solutions using React, Kotlin, Swift, Java Spring Boot, REST APIs & microservices
• Apply API-first, event-driven & cloud-native engineering principles
• Build security, resilience, performance, accessibility & operability into solution designs
• Identify cross-squad dependencies, technical risks & opportunities for reuse
• Review designs, engineering standards, support code reviews & DevOps practices
• Partner with architects while remaining closely connected to engineering delivery
• Coach engineers & influence technical decisions across Client Experience

To be successful, you will have:

• Deep software engineering experience & strong technical design capability
• Experience designing customer-facing web or mobile applications in a complex environment
• Strong knowledge of React, Kotlin, Swift &/or Java Spring Boot
• Experience with REST APIs, microservices, Kafka & event-driven architecture
• Cloud & DevOps experience, ideally including Azure, Azure DevOps, containers & CI/CD
• Strong understanding of security, identity & access management, OAuth, resilience & performance
• Experience creating & reviewing high & low-level technical designs
• The ability to influence technical decisions & communicate clearly with both engineers & nontechnical stakeholders
• Experience using modern AI coding tools, such as GitHub Copilot or equivalent
• Understanding of modern AI engineering concepts, including LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG, agentic workflows, evaluation and responsible AI.
• Financial services, digital banking, Open Banking experience will be highly regarded

Location & Working Arrangements:

This role must be based in Sydney & offers a flexible hybrid working model with both in office & at home working.
