Design Manager – Water Recycling West
Hybrid – Peterborough (3 days per week in the office for those within the Anglian Water region; flexible hybrid options available for candidates based further afield)
Balfour Beatty play a key role as part of the {(6) Anglian Water's @one Alliance: Overview | LinkedIn} @Anglian Water’s one Alliance. The Alliance is a ground-breaking collaboration between Anglian Water and eight industry-leading partners: Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska and SWECO. And together, we deliver around 40% of Anglian Water’s capital investment programme.
As we progress through AMP8 – our most ambitious asset management period to date – we’re delivering nature-based and sustainable infrastructure, from wetlands to urban drainage schemes, setting new benchmarks for environmental performance.
As our Design Manager for Water Recycling West, you’ll lead the engineering design delivery of a diverse portfolio of water recycling projects across the region. You’ll head up a multidisciplinary engineering team, driving innovative and sustainable solutions that improve wastewater treatment performance, reduce carbon and enhance natural capital.
Working collaboratively across the @one Alliance, you’ll champion new ways of working, focusing on outcomes over outputs while embracing digital technologies, standardisation and continuous improvement.

What you'll be doing
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead the design delivery of a portfolio of water recycling and wastewater projects.
- Develop and manage Engineering Project Plans covering scope, programme, cost, risk and resources.
- Direct multidisciplinary teams across process, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering to deliver high-quality design solutions.
- Collaborate with suppliers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders to ensure designs are integrated effectively.
- Drive affordability, value and the delivery of low-carbon, environmentally sustainable solutions.
- Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations and promote a strong health and safety culture throughout the design process.
- Lead, mentor and develop a high-performing engineering team.
- Support innovation, standardisation and the effective use of digital engineering, including 3D modelling.
- Work closely with wider Alliance functions, including delivery, procurement and construction, to achieve successful project outcomes.
What You’ll Bring
- A degree in Engineering or an equivalent relevant qualification.
- Chartered status, or demonstrable progress towards achieving Chartered status.
- Proven experience of leading engineering teams and delivering designs for capital projects.
- A strong understanding of CDM Regulations and design responsibilities.
- Experience within the water sector or on major infrastructure projects.
- Experience managing risk, programme delivery, project costs and affordability.
- Strong leadership, collaboration and decision-making skills.
- A passion for sustainability, innovation and continuous improvement.
