Do you enjoy getting to the bottom of technical problems? Are you comfortable reading code, but more interested in keeping software running reliably than developing it? Join our Axon team as an Application Operations Engineer and put your technical curiosity to work.
Key about your role
An unexpected error, a failed application process or a configuration issue: you look beyond the symptoms to understand what is happening. You investigate logs, follow existing Java code and use SQL to connect application behaviour with the underlying data and configuration.
As an Application Operations Engineer at Keylane, you help keep Axon running reliably for our customers. Your focus is application operations, deployments and technical investigation. You use your understanding of the software to identify causes, resolve operational issues and determine when a problem needs the expertise of another team.
You oversee deployments, network and security configurations, and whitelisting. Through end-to-end technical validation, you check that the application and its supporting components work as expected following a deployment or configuration change.
When an issue requires a software change, you carry out the initial technical analysis and use your development skills to implement small changes where appropriate. You discuss your findings and proposed solutions with the software engineers in Product Development (PD), collaborate on more complex changes and help verify that the fix resolves the problem. You also look beyond individual incidents: you recognise recurring issues, share what you have learned and contribute to clearer procedures and more effective troubleshooting.
You help standardise and automate department processes, including maintaining runbooks, managing containers and improving configuration management with Ansible or Puppet where applicable.
This combination of application knowledge, operational responsibility and collaboration gives you the opportunity to deepen your technical expertise across troubleshooting, deployments and automation.
Key about your team
You join the Axon team, a group of highly skilled IT professionals with expertise in Java, databases, networks and servers, containers and automation, combined with knowledge of the Property & Casualty insurance domain.
You work closely with colleagues in development, infrastructure and support. Together, you investigate issues that involve the application, its data and the environment it runs in. You bring the operational perspective, helping colleagues understand what is happening in practice and what is needed to restore reliable service.
Communication is an important part of your work. You help colleagues and customers understand technical findings and next steps, and keep them informed as an investigation progresses. Within the team, you share knowledge, discuss possible solutions and turn experience into practical improvements.
There is also time to have fun together: we organise team activities to get to know each other beyond our daily work.
Main technologies
- Axon application: Java
- Containers and deployments: Kubernetes, Rancher and Kargo
- Databases: IBM Db2 and PostgreSQL
- Monitoring: CheckMK and Elastic
- Configuration management: Ansible or Puppet, where applicable
You are curious about how applications work and methodical when something goes wrong. You gather evidence, consider possible causes and take responsibility for moving an issue towards a resolution. You are comfortable asking questions and involving colleagues when their expertise is needed.
We would also like you to bring the following:
- You have experience investigating technical application issues, for example in application management, technical support or IT operations.
- You can read and interpret existing Java code, connecting application logic with the behaviour you see in logs and error messages.
- You can use SQL to investigate application data and are familiar with working in Linux environments.
- You communicate clearly, enjoy working with others and consider customer impact and operational risk when deciding what to do next.
Using AI
- You have used AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, GitHub Copilot or Cursor, in your work or your own projects. You can explain how you have used them to explore solutions, understand unfamiliar code, develop or improve code and tests, troubleshoot issues, or support code reviews.
- You understand how AI-assisted development fits into the broader software development lifecycle. You can guide coding assistants with clear requirements and context, including through reusable instructions, skills or agents where relevant.
- You critically review, test and debug AI-generated code. You can identify incorrect assumptions, security vulnerabilities and maintainability issues, and you remain accountable for the logic, architecture, quality and security of what you deliver.
- Experience with CI/CD practices and integrating AI-assisted development into those workflows is a plus.
You bring practical development skills: you can understand existing code, investigate problems systematically, and implement small software changes where appropriate. You work with the software engineers in Product Development (PD) to discuss your findings and proposed changes, helping keep the application running reliably.
