ABOUT KYLER CARES

At Kyler Cares, we're working to improve health outcomes for people of color living with diabetes by improving access to diabetes technology, creating connections to education and resources, and fostering community as an added system of support on our journeys.

Position Overview

The Educators role: We're looking for someone who talks with kids and teens, not at them, and can make a 30-minute Zoom on low blood sugar feel like time well spent. Brings cultural humility and fluency—you understand that a family's food, language, schedule, and history with the healthcare system all shape how they manage T1D. Treats numbers as stats, not grades, and leads with encouragement instead of shame. Lives in or knows New York City and its neighborhoods well. Truly embodies the Kyler Cares mission and values

Lead the Kyler Care Curriculum

  • Ability to teach our Kyler Cares curriculum built for students ages 10–15 and moves in a deliberate order: Survival Skills, then Daily Life, then Identity, then Power. Twelve modules, each running two to three weeks, cover everything from treating lows and knowing your numbers to device confidence, lunchroom strategy, culturally rooted eating, sports and sick days, burnout, stigma, and independence.
  • Lead weekly virtual group sessions (up to 12 students), co-facilitating with a DMC Ambassador and, depending on the module, a nutritionist, nurse, care provider, or device brand rep.
  • Run hands-on activity sessions at in-person DMC events, like building personal low kits at Museum Day or putting "know your numbers" into practice on the ice at our skating event.
  • The current curriculum is a foundation, not a cage. We want you reading the room, drawing out kids' own stories, and making the content land for the young people in front of you.
  • Close the loop on Mighty Networks, our community platform: run end-of-session assessments, prompt students to track progress, and help shape the async content and discussion that keeps learning going between sessions.
  • Use our own media as teaching tools, including Sugar Hill High, our comic series that puts T1D at the center of a teen's story.
  • Help us improve the curriculum. Bring feedback from the room to our curriculum consultant so each cycle gets sharper.

Be the Go-To For Families

  • Some needs don't fit a group session. When a student or caregiver needs something specific, you're the one we call.
  • Take on customized education requests: a newly diagnosed family, a student switching to a pump or CGM, a caregiver who needs to understand the school day plan, a teen who is struggling and needs 1:1 time.
  • Partner closely with our Social Work team. They'll bring you families who need an educator, and you'll flag families who need social care support. Every referral gets followed up.
  • Support caregiver and teen groups when education is the need.

Be a Line for School Nurses

  • DMC has reached more than 1,400 school nurses across all five boroughs. Nurses are some of our most important allies, and we want them to know they have a diabetes educator in their corner.
  • Lead and co-present at our Lunch & Learns for NYC school nurses and staff.
  • Serve as a resource when nurses have questions about devices, new technology, or how to support a particular student.

Co-Lead With Our Partners

  • Co-lead education sessions with SmartStart, our device navigation partner, helping families get onboarded and confident with their technology.
  • Work with device and pharma partners on device-focused modules (CGMs, pumps, wearing tech through gym, sleep, and style) while keeping our content independent and family-first.
  • Partner with nutrition and community organizations on sessions like our culturally responsive cooking and food workshops

Grow the Clinical Network

  • Build real relationships with the diabetes educators and social workers at our clinical partners across the city, including pediatric diabetes teams at Montefiore, NYU Langone, Naomi Berrie, Kings County, and others.
  • Share resources both ways so families hear a consistent message from their clinic, their school, and from us.
  • Help open new referral pathways into DMC and keep expanding the network.

Document the Work

  • Keep clear, timely notes on sessions, attendance, assessments, and 1:1 requests in our case management system.
  • Good documentation matters here: it supports how DMC services are funded and reimbursed, and it feeds our research partnership with Stanford measuring DMC's impact.
  • Teach and support within each child's care plan as set by their own diabetes care team. You don't change insulin doses or medical orders. When something needs a clinician, you know how to route it quickly and clearly.
  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), or a licensed clinician (RN, RD, NP, or similar) with substantial diabetes education experience and a plan to sit for the CDCES.
  • Brings cultural humility and fluency. You understand that a family's food, language, schedule, and history with the healthcare system all shape how they manage T1D.
  • Comfort leading groups, both virtually and in person. Experience educating kids, teens, and families living with Type 1 Diabetes.
  • Moves fast, stays organized, and follows through. You like building something new!
  • Working knowledge of current diabetes technology: CGMs, insulin pumps, and automated insulin delivery systems.
  • Ability to complete NYC Public Schools background clearance and fingerprinting.
  • Availability for weekday evening sessions and at least some Saturday events.
  • Understands the nuisances and culture of the New York City neighborhoods.
