Lighthouse Works is a mission-driven, values-based organization providing creative, competitive, and integrated employment opportunities for blind and visually-impaired working-aged individuals in Central Florida. Lighthouse Works also drives real business for real customers that supports and grows the rehabilitation training at Lighthouse Central Florida.

Basic Function:

We seek a Digital Accessibility Specialist to audit websites and digital content like documents, and remediate PDFs and Microsoft Office files. This position combines automated evaluation with manual, visual, keyboard, and assistive technology testing to identify barriers and produce usable, accessible content. The Specialist documents findings, recommends practical corrections, completes document remediation, and verifies results against the standards and scope established for each engagement.

Essential Job Requirements:

  • Review websites and documents to define audit scope, representative pages, user workflows, document complexity, and effort estimates; support proposals and statements of work.
  • Run automated accessibility testing, investigate reported issues, resolve false positives, and perform manual checks for requirements that automated tools cannot reliably assess.
  • Test keyboard navigation, focus order and visibility, keyboard traps, menus, dialogs, forms, error handling, and dynamic content across agreed browsers and devices.
  • Evaluate visual presentation, including text and non-text contrast, focus indicators, information conveyed by color, content hierarchy, and content obscured, clipped, or overlapping.
  • Test zoom, text resizing, reflow, text spacing, responsive layouts, and interaction targets; identify loss of content or functionality under alternate display settings.
  • Use screen readers and browser inspection tools to assess accessible names, roles, states, relationships, announcements, navigation, and the underlying HTML and ARIA implementation.
  • Evaluate images, charts, diagrams, tables, and multimedia for equivalent access to information, including meaningful alternative text and applicable caption or transcript requirements.
  • Document reproducible findings with affected pages or files, applicable success criteria, user impact, severity, evidence, and practical remediation recommendations.
  • Audit PDFs, Word documents, presentations, and spreadsheets for structure, reading order, headings, tables, links, forms, alternative text, contrast, and other applicable requirements.
  • Remediate PDF tags, heading and list structures, reading order, table headers and cell associations, artifacts, links, bookmarks, metadata, and accessible form fields.
  • Apply optical character recognition (OCR) to scanned documents; compare recognized text with original content and correct missing text, recognition errors, symbols, and numeric information.
  • Create accurate alternative text and descriptions for images, charts, and diagrams; consult content owners when complex information or meaning requires clarification.
  • Remediate Office source files using appropriate styles, layouts, table structures, and accessibility features; verify that exported PDFs retain accessible structure and content.
  • Validate remediated files through automated checks, manual inspection, keyboard testing, and assistive technology. Compare rendered output with the source to preserve information, layout, and intended meaning.
  • Retest website and document corrections, check for regressions, and maintain accurate records of resolved, outstanding, and out-of-scope findings.
  • Explain audit results to clients and developers, prioritize corrective actions, and provide practical guidance on accessible content authoring and remediation.
  • Prepare audit summaries, report cards, punch lists, and Accessibility Conformance Reports using approved VPAT templates when included in scope; accurately describe test coverage and limitations.
  • Participate in peer reviews, maintain test evidence and file versions, track assignments and turnaround times, and protect confidential client information.
  • Collaborate with Lighthouse developers and accessibility testers to improve internal and client solutions; maintain knowledge of relevant standards, techniques, and testing tools.
  • Represent Lighthouse Works’ Core Values: Servant Leadership, Inclusion, Collaboration, Empowerment, and Excellence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
