This role oversees the Bookkeeping organization, ensuring consistent service quality, operational excellence, and scalable processes while delivering an exceptional client experience. The Director partners closely with cross-functional leaders to optimize workflows, drive workforce planning, improve operational performance, and support strategic initiatives that enhance the Bookkeeping service offering. This role is accountable for developing leaders, maintaining operational readiness, and ensuring the department is positioned for continued growth and success. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development Provide strategic leadership for the Bookkeeping department, ensuring alignment with company objectives and operational priorities. Lead, coach, and develop Bookkeeping Managers and Supervisors while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Establish performance expectations and development plans for department leaders. Drive employee engagement, succession planning, and leadership development initiatives. Operational Excellence Oversee daily bookkeeping operations to ensure consistent, accurate, and timely service delivery. Standardize workflows, operating procedures, and quality expectations across the department. Evaluate, implement, and optimize the department's technology stack (including AI-driven accounting tools, OCR data capture, and practice management software) to drive efficiency and reduce manual processing. Monitor departmental capacity and performance while ensuring operational readiness during peak periods. Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, automation, scalability, and quality. Service Delivery & Client Experience Ensure exceptional client service through consistent execution of bookkeeping processes and proactive issue resolution. Ensure bookkeeping deliverables are structurally optimized for entity frameworks (LLCs, S-Corps, Trusts) to allow a seamless transition to the Tax Department, minimizing year-end adjustments. Partner with Client Success and Operations teams to resolve complex client issues and improve the overall client experience. Monitor client satisfaction trends and implement initiatives that improve retention and service quality. Partner with IT, Legal, and Compliance teams to operationalize and enforce data security protocols, internal controls, and regulatory compliance standards across all bookkeeping workflows. Performance Management & Workforce Planning Own departmental KPIs, service levels, quality metrics, productivity, utilization, and operational reporting. Lead workforce planning activities, including staffing forecasts, hiring recommendations, and resource allocation. Conduct regular business reviews to evaluate operational performance and identify improvement opportunities. Utilize reporting and analytics to support data-driven operational decisions. Cross-Functional Partnership Partner with Product, Technology, Finance, Client Success, and Shared Service Center leadership to support operational initiatives and new product implementations. Provide operational input into product enhancements and workflow improvements. Ensure successful implementation of new systems, processes, and operational changes. Optimize and scale a global delivery model, effectively balancing onshore and offshore resources to maximize operational efficiency, capacity, and cost-effectiveness. Financial & Business Management Manage departmental budgets and operating expenses. Support pricing, profitability, and financial performance initiatives related to Bookkeeping services. Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency while maintaining high service standards. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. Minimum of 10 years of experience in bookkeeping, accounting services, or financial operations, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role. Proven experience leading large operational teams within a professional services, accounting, or bookkeeping environment. Strong understanding of bookkeeping principles, financial reporting, and operational best practices. Demonstrated experience improving operational performance through process optimization, workforce planning, and performance management. Excellent leadership, communication, coaching, and stakeholder management skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks and operational systems including Salesforce or similar CRM platforms. Preferred Qualifications CPA designation or Bachelor's degree in Accounting strongly preferred. Master's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance. Experience leading hybrid US and offshore bookkeeping operations. Experience in a bookkeeping, accounting, tax advisory, or financial consulting organization. Experience implementing automation, workflow optimization, and operational transformation initiatives.
