Ombudsman for Banking Services and InvestmentsCanada’s Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI) is a national, independent and not-for-profit organization that helps resolve and reduce disputes between consumers and financial services firms in both official languages. OBSI is responsive to consumer inquiries, conducts fair and accessible investigations of unresolved disputes, and shares its knowledge and expertise with the stakeholders and the public. If a consumer has a complaint against an OBSI participating bank or investment firm that they are not able to resolve with the bank or firm, OBSI will investigate at no cost to the consumer. Job Title: Director, Data Engineering and AI Vacancy: New vacancy Salary Range: $130,000 – $180,000 with the placement and offered salary being based on knowledge, skills, education/training and experience, as well as external market conditions and internal equity Workplace Type: Hybrid arrangement. The OBSI office is located in downtown Toronto. The Director of Data Engineering and AI, supports the design, development, and leadership of OBSI’s data platform, governance framework, analytics, and AI agent development to help make OBSI a more data-oriented, integrated, automated, and insight-driven organization. This is a hands-on leadership role, with approximately 80% of responsibilities focused on data and AI design, and engineering, and approximately 20% focused on data strategy and governance. Working within the Microsoft ecosystem, the Director will lead a small team, growing the function over time, and building the strategy and capability to manage both structured and unstructured information. This role is well suited to an experienced data and AI leader who enjoys applied work and is committed to using technology responsibly in a regulated, privacy-sensitive environment. Duties and Responsibilities Build and lead a unified Microsoft Azure data and reporting platform that brings together data from Dynamics 365, Dataverse, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Fabric, and other key sources. Define and manage the metadata, taxonomy, and content ontology needed to organize, catalogue, govern, and improve the discoverability of information using Microsoft Purview. Establish data governance, quality, and privacy standards appropriate for a regulated environment that manages sensitive personal and financial complaint information. Deliver Power BI reporting and self-serve analytics that support internal decision making and external reporting on complaint trends and systemic issues. Extend this foundation to structured, semi-structured, and unstructured content across SharePoint, PDFs, Word documents, images, and call recordings, using Microsoft tools such as Azure AI Document Intelligence, Azure AI Speech, and Azure AI Search. Create an AI-ready data foundation and deliver applied AI and automation solutions using Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, and Power Automate. Apply AI capabilities to support transcription, summarization, sentiment analysis, entity extraction, image understanding, and document understanding, and make the resulting insights usable across the organization. Work with business leaders to prioritize AI Agent use cases and set practical standards that make solutions safe, scalable, reliable, and fit for responsible use. Key Qualifications, Abilities, and Skills Seven or more years of experience in data engineering or data platform roles within the Microsoft data ecosystem, including Azure data services, Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL, Dataverse, and Power BI, with practical experience using Dynamics 365 and SharePoint as data sources. Certification or project experience in data engineering, machine learning, cloud architecture, or related Microsoft data and AI technologies are an asset Proven ability to build cloud data platforms, pipelines, and governance practices from an early stage. Experience working with semi-structured and unstructured data at scale, including document processing, optical character recognition, speech-to-text, summarization, sentiment analysis, and entity extraction. Experience creating AI-ready data foundations and delivering AI Agents solutions that are practical, reliable, and aligned with business needs. Experience using open-source tools within Azure while keeping organizational data inside the Microsoft environment. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, with a responsible approach to AI that supports OBSI’s public interest mission.
