SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Vice President of the Office of Research, provides overall leadership and strategic direction of Departmental Research Administration. Includes direct management of the pre-and-post award managers, directing and monitoring of overall operations across pre and post award, Human Resource support, financial management and Time and Effort functions. Work on specific projects as requested by the Vice President.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as point person for overall research departmental administration and facilitates smooth coordination, communication, and problem resolution among Departmental Administrators, Grants and Contracts, Research Finance, research faculty, departmental leaders, and other hospital and university departments.

Develop standardized policies, best practices, operating procedures, templates, and expectations for overall effective Departmental Research Administration support.

Develop metrics to guide staffing models, workload distribution, portfolio assignments, and resource allocations.

Prepares/provides reports and documents as requested by Vice President of Research on a regular basis.

Maintains current knowledge of sponsor requirements, procedures and areas of interest through active communication with sponsors and professional societies. Since sponsor requirements are multiple, diverse and often amended, this also requires the ability to detect areas where new regulations need to be understood and interpreted.

Represents the DRA group at management meetings, hospital teams, and to the Research Advisory Committee.

Support staff development and training to maximize ability of Departmental Research Administration personnel to effectively perform required duties.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Requires knowledge of business (finance, and accounting practices) normally acquired through the completion of an undergraduate degree, master’s degree preferred.

Requires knowledge of administration guidelines of federal and non-federal funding agencies supporting biomedical and clinical research.

Excellent verbal and written skills are essential. The ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds such as M.D.'s, scientists, attorneys, sponsors and governmental officials is essential.

Thorough knowledge of microcomputers, peripheral equipment and networks. Thorough knowledge of software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Windows.

EXPERIENCE:

At least five years management experience in a research/academic environment to include federal and non-federal funding, grant application processes, and regulations set by local, federal, hospital, and independent agencies.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs relatively independently within the department’s policies and practices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Normal office environment. Hybrid work arrangement possible but coming to office required weekly.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervises managers and their direct reports.

Pay Range:

$121,596.80-$200,616.00
