About Switch
At Switch, we don’t just design, build and operate data centers—we are enabling the technology of the future. Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.
We believe that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the world’s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.
The Role: Director, Energy Rates & Billing
The Director, Energy Rates & Billing leads the development, forecasting, allocation, and administration of customer energy rates across Switch’s data center portfolio. This role ensures power costs are accurately translated into customer billing structures that support cost recovery, financial planning, and contractual commitments.
You will develop and maintain rate methodologies, financial models, billing controls, and forecasting processes that account for utility tariffs, purchased power, generation costs, transmission charges, renewable energy, and campus operating data.
You will partner with Energy, Finance, Revenue Accounting, Operations, Sales, Legal, and other teams to ensure customer rates are accurate, transparent, and supported by reliable data. You will also serve as a technical and commercial resource for customer energy billing questions and provide senior leadership with clear recommendations on rate structures, cost drivers, and financial risks.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the development and administration of customer energy rates, pricing methodologies, and billing structures across Switch campuses, including fixed, variable, usage-based, demand-based, pass-through, blended, and contract-specific arrangements.
- Develop and maintain cost-allocation models for purchased power, generation, capacity, transmission, distribution, congestion, ancillary services, fuel, losses, renewable energy credits, environmental attributes, storage, taxes, fees, and other energy-related costs.
- Interpret utility tariffs, special contracts, power purchase agreements, tolling arrangements, retail supply agreements, and on-site generation economics to establish accurate customer billing methodologies.
- Develop short- and long-term energy rate forecasts by campus and customer, incorporating load growth, generation mix, commodity prices, utility rate changes, transmission costs, renewable requirements, market conditions, and contractual escalators.
- Own and improve customer energy billing models, calculators, workpapers, and controls used for monthly billing, customer proposals, budgeting, contract negotiations, and executive decisions.
- Reconcile utility and supplier invoices, meter and sub-meter data, generation output, settlement information, and customer usage to validate billing inputs and identify discrepancies.
- Establish repeatable billing processes, data controls, audit trails, and system requirements in partnership with Revenue Accounting, Finance, Operations, Energy, and IT.
- Analyze budget-to-actual performance, rate variances, customer usage, PUE-based allocation factors, and other cost drivers to explain material changes and recommend corrective actions.
- Partner with Sales and commercial teams to develop customer-facing power pricing, rate estimates, contract assumptions, escalation mechanisms, and energy cost information.
- Serve as a primary resource for customer energy rate and billing questions, explaining rate components, forecast changes, true-ups, renewable costs, and billing methodologies.
- Monitor utility tariffs, rate cases, large-load tariffs, transmission charges, wholesale market rules, renewable compliance costs, and regulatory developments that may affect customer rates.
- Develop dashboards and recurring reports that track customer rates, forecast versus actual power costs, billing accuracy, cost recovery, load trends, utility changes, and financial risks.
- Coordinate with Legal, Finance, Accounting, Sales, Site Development, Operations, Sustainability, Engineering, and executive leadership to align billing practices with customer contracts and commercial objectives.
- Prepare executive presentations, customer materials, financial analyses, and decision packages that explain rate methodologies, assumptions, economics, sensitivities, risks, and recommendations.
What We’re Looking For
- You use sound financial and commercial judgment when developing customer rates and evaluating energy costs.
- You translate complex utility tariffs, energy contracts, and market information into clear, defensible billing methodologies.
- You maintain high standards for financial accuracy, documentation, reconciliation, and internal controls.
- You identify billing discrepancies, cost allocation issues, and financial risks early and develop practical solutions.
- You communicate complex rate and billing concepts clearly to customers, executives, Finance, and non-technical stakeholders.
- You balance contractual requirements, cost recovery, customer transparency, and long-term rate competitiveness.
- You work effectively across Energy, Finance, Accounting, Operations, Sales, Legal, and technical teams.
- You take ownership of complex financial models and billing processes and follow issues through resolution.
- You use data and clearly documented assumptions to support financial recommendations and business decisions.
- You identify opportunities to improve billing accuracy, reporting, forecasting, and operational efficiency.
What You’ll Bring
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of relevant experience in utility rates, energy billing, power markets, energy finance, cost allocation, revenue requirements, utility accounting, energy procurement, or a related analytical role.
- Strong understanding of electric utility tariffs, rate structures, billing determinants, demand and energy charges, transmission and distribution costs, wholesale market charges, and customer energy cost drivers.
- Experience developing or managing complex rate, billing, cost-of-service, cost-allocation, revenue, or energy pricing models involving multiple cost components and customer contracts.
- Working knowledge of power supply economics, including utility service, wholesale power, power purchase agreements, on-site generation, natural gas, capacity, ancillary services, renewable energy credits, storage, and transmission-related charges.
- Experience interpreting commercial agreements and tariff provisions and translating requirements into financial models, billing rules, forecasts, and customer-facing explanations.
- Strong analytical and reconciliation skills, including experience with large datasets, interval or metered usage data, invoices, settlements, forecasts, and variance analysis.
- Experience developing auditable financial models and documenting assumptions, calculations, and supporting data.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex financial and energy information to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, Engineering, Energy, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting data centers, colocation, hyperscale infrastructure, large commercial and industrial customers, utilities, or other metered power billing environments.
- Experience with customer power billing, utility invoice validation, sub-metering, usage reconciliation, PUE-based allocation, power overages, surcharges, or comparable data center billing structures.
- Experience with utility cost-of-service studies, class cost allocation, rate design, revenue requirements, tariff analysis, or implementation of rate changes in customer billing systems.
- Experience allocating renewable energy, renewable energy credits, carbon-free energy, battery storage, demand response, distributed generation, or on-site generation costs within customer rates or energy portfolios.
- Experience developing recurring rate forecasts, customer billing calculators, management dashboards, audit controls, settlement review processes, or energy portfolio reporting tools.
We recognize that qualified candidates may not meet every preferred qualification. If your experience aligns with the core responsibilities of the role, we encourage you to apply.
